well from what little i've heard about the gameplay for doom3. it sounds better and more indepth then previous id games. you're not supposed just go shooting hords of monsters and what not. i think one of the ideas was to be hunting down 1 enemy through a map. with the amazing lighting and shadows, it could prove to be very suspenseful. but time will tell.
i think a geforce 3 is a minimum you need to have for the game if you want the nice lighting and shadows. but i i'm sure it will still run on other cards with lowerd graphics. carmack usualy codes his engines well so that they don't need a super computer to run.
but anyways. so what if id's game isn't ground breaking in gameplay. they are pretty much the innovators of the technology. then other companies will take that game engine and focus on gameplay. that's kind of the way it works with id games, so at least you can look forward to that. personaly i think the graphics look amazing. sure maybe it looks bad compared to prerenderd 3d, but for realtime 3d? that's really good i'd say. ambient-whisper said it best though. how can we expect it to look real when the latest pre-renderd stuff isn't even there yet.
GTA:3 is definately a good example of great gamplay. unfortunately lots of people. inclueding myself are having troubles with all the slowdown and choppiness.

based on the video Dr. Bang linked to I'd say it looks like a prettier version of Q2 in terms of gameplay. |

It really looks zip all like quake 2. The real story has yet to even be hinted at, but we know they've hired a serious writer so we can assume that there will be a serious story (what they show is just a re-hash of the original doom plot). I think the ambience displayed in the 11 minute footage says it all: doom is going to be a very scary experience. People say id is all about the technology, but what makes the demo footage so creepy is most definitely the dynamic real-time lighting, the astounding physics (enemies tumbling down stairs), the professional sounds (trent rez), and in the end, the way it has all been put together. It says bloody bucket loads about the id team, i think, which not to mention has gained and lost certian employees since quake 2 (their last single player game).
on a seperate note, their artists are ones to be admired. kenneth scott (texture artists\modeller) and Fred Nilsson (animator who worked on shrek and other high budget\poly films). |

yes!
carmack gets all the credit, but as digital artists you guys just GOTTA respect the artistic talent that id has. i remember looking through q3a skins and thinking how awesome they were. too bad the work was wasted on such a crappy game.
it must be nice for the artists to go back to making kickass stuff for a neat single player experience. |
