Hi, guys. I was wondering, when you have to draw complex perspectives (I mean REALLY complex, with lots of details), do you help yourselves with 3D modelling programs like the ones I�ve just mentioned in the topic title? or you just go the traditional way? Would you consider this "cheating"?
You see, I was drawing a complex perspective, when I noticed I made a stupid but major mistake. I got mad and lost my will and inspiration. That�s when I thought about using Rhino or 3D Studio just to get "a little help".
A couple of hours later, I started drawing the whole thing all over again. But, if I blow my drawing once more, I think I will do my perspective in 3D! I can�t lose any more time...

There is only one cheating rule when creating art -- don't rip off another's painting or photo. All else follows the number one rule of art - RULE: there are no rules when it comes to making art.
...and the two Ps for success are Practice and Persistance.

About the photograph thing, what happens if you only use a photo as reference for your painting/composition? Though of course some photos may be unique regarding subject matter, but besides that, are you violating any... artistic understanding... by making use of content from the photo? How important is it to gather reference and ideas first hand, and where is the line between inspiration and ripping-off drawn?

I suppose a lawyer would have a good answer for that question, but to me it is one of the gray areas where the answer is tied more to the motivation of the artist than any particular copyright laws.
Obviously an out and out copy of another's photo, especially if the content or meaning of the photo has specific importance, is a rip-off... unless it is being done purely for practice and if shown, gets the permission of the photographer.
To my mind, using other's photos for reference to understand anatomy or structure is fine... as long as that is the true intention and exact copies, paint overs or cut'n'pastes are not being made.
That said... it is indeed a gray area that often will test an artist's veracity in this day of instant image retrieval.
OTOH, if the photo is one of yours, then do whatever you want with it...
