Hey I am working on learning to Matte Paint for a class here in college. This is my first ever painting+matte painting. It's def not finished, but I would like to hear suggestions from anyone willing to post. The plate used is from Dylan Cole's Gnomon DVD, and my paint process is nearly identical as well, but I just want to know if I am doing alright so far... Any tips, crits, comment? Must be someone here to help me a bit.

Are the rocks handpainted, or photosourced?

Looks like you're going along okay. Some things to think about:

. The image kinda feels like it's leaning to the left, just because of the way the shapes on the left angle down. You'll need to watch that.

. When you start focusing the background, try to give it some depth. In its current form, the back hills and clouds look like one layer, and the two middle hills look like another layer. You want to try and give the impression that this is one sweeping landscape, not a series of levels.

. I'm not sure, from this image, what the image is about. We get a lot of rocks, and then some very distant hills. What's the composition? What's the center of interest?

Hey thanks a bunch for the help and great comments. I'm really new to all this stuff, witha poor artistic background. In response to your comments,

The rocks are from a photo from the main plate I used. I can see now the image does lean to the left (majority of elements on the left, open on the right) I think better blending/lighting would possibly give the hills a better feel, but I may just rework,or start over on that piece. How would you suggest to create a sweeping landscape?

As far as what the image is about, it is mainly just for practice in learning how to matte paint... poor narrative I know... I am trying to build my skills a lil more. It's a following process from Dylan Coles Gnomon Workshop DVD 1, kind of just getting the basics and foundadtion on matte painting. The center of focus is the light near the BG on the right side (in the DVD anyway) It's pretty dull in the narrative sense, but I think it just focuses on the composition and technique. I plan to have a couple more asap. Thanks again...Anyone else? I need allthe comments and help I can get Smile

If you're using the Dylan Cole DVD, you should go through to the end and see what you come up with.
