Hey everyone ,
I disappeared for a bit because I've been trying to crank out a decent portfolio. I made my deadline for friday... but I'm a bit late and finished last night.
Anyway, today, I'll try to send all this stuff out, but it snowed here pretty bad yesterday, so I'm not sure if i'll be able to get it out today.
The first 11 or 12 are charcoal stick drawings and prismacolor pencils(the red/brown ones).
Then there are a few oil paintings.
Let me know what you guys think... Whether I even have a shot or not for the AC people lurking here..

Prismacolor Pencils:
Oils (sorry for the glares, blurriness. took the pics fast):

Hey annis,
to me them oils are far superior the charcoal / pencil drawing ones, I like the paintings alot!
the pencil drawings, it might sound harsh but I would suggest trying to bring some other pieces out. the best one to me is the last one of them, it has a dynamic feel and ease to it. number 5 is pretty nice as well. the other ones could use some work, they lack a dynamic feel in anatomy and rendering. example, first drawing, his neck doesnt show at all, head feels small, as in many of the other ones too. number 3 is really nice dynamically speaking, if you want to keep it work more on his left hand, and the head is too small and slightly alien like. the head portraits are fairly nicely rendered yet somewhat stiff, its mostly in the eyes, they seem dead or looking in different directions.
sorry if this came out too harsh but I think you are doing awesome(!) with colors (and maybe more towards environments), I don't know if one has to show different medias / areas or if its enough sticking with a few, but what I've seen from your color work in the speeds and your oils here it didnt feel as if the pencils were from the same person.
best of luck to you, I wish you all well! _________________ homepage:blog |

Annis,
You should do more gesture drawings. 5 min figure drawings that is. Your figures lack movement and emotion and this is important to Art Center people(I am one). The oils are pretty good but everything could use some work. For the most part the entering illustration portfolio should consist of figure drawings. They also really like conceptual and imaginative stuff. Don't be afraid to send prints of digital work. All and all I would say you need a little more time and I do not think you should rush it. There is no real deadline for entering students. They accept applications until classes are all full. I was accepted about a week before classes began. On the other hand I have seen a lot of students there who needed more work before they started yet they got in. Depends on whether or not you are ready not whether or not you will get in. _________________ Life is only what you make of it. |

thanks for the truthful comments guys. it really was what I was looking for . I guess i'll wait out another week or so and try to crank out some better looking stuff..
i appreciate it . Adam, thanks for telling me about the digital stuff. i thought AC looked down on it for entering freshmen, and just looked at the traditional stuff. but since if digital can help, that's great .
daryl> thanks. yeah, i've had some trouble with this stuff. i don't have enough money to go out and take actual classes in art at the moment. plus, im a senior in high school, so it doesnt leave much time for those except saturday classes. anyhow, i really do need work on the faces. i suppose selfportraits should help. i'll try to get the head out in #5 . Eyes are very quite difficult. I'll just keep throwing more stuff out . thanks again _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |

Be persistent and don't give up. I graduated from ACCD last year and it was an intense but fun experience. You have some nice digital images in your website which you should include in your portfolio, but the bulk of your work should be figure drawings/paintings for the illustration program. Good luck! |

Id say you should be fine to get in, but you may notice that people who are coming from other colleges or with previous degrees seem to be completely dominating. In some aspects, i think, depending on what your goal is, you should not be in a hurry to get to art center. Pasadena City College for instance is a great school to further hone your skills. If i hadnt put in my 2 years there first, it would have been much harder and much more frustrating. Im halfway done and now im freaking out and wanting to slow down, because theres so much more i still want to learn. Best of luck, and start getting that precious sleep while you still can.... _________________ http://www.whitehallstudios.com

crayola and helltaxi> thanks...
crayola> thanks. i decided to follow up and included 2 of my digital works..
helltaxi> My situation's complicated, I guess. If I weren't in the situation... I would definitely have chosen to go to a different college and worked through there for a year or so and then transferred over to Art Center. My goal is pretty much the movie/game industry as a matte painter or a concept-artist. An Ideal goal perhaps... I'm planning on working about 5-6 hours a day before getting to AC and improve on most weaknesses. I appreciate the advice. thanks . _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |
