This is my favorite place to be.
thanks to everyone for the inspiration, I only wish we could all have a beer together.

Watmough: that, sir, is tasty. Bravo.

Lingy-o: I forgot to say that I dig your pirate battle!

Mitsui: nice work, thanks for always being lighthearted with your work. its a nice change from the ubiquitous dark, moody art here.

this is a mess I made playing with layers. I was liking where it was going until I realized the perspective on the building I was detailing is all wonky. not sure how to fix it. any ideas? maybe I'll have to start over again. damn, and I thought it was gonna turn out to be a nice finished piece.

Cicinimo, I worked on it about 10 minutes at a time over a long period. If I looked at it and was not sure about what i wanted to do with it, I would just put it away for a while. Its a luxurious way to work that would not work in the real world. Did the same with the Baron image. Total time, no idea. I did spend a lot of time reworking things. Learned a lot. No such thing as a finished picture, just one you have lost interest in, or are more interested in others.

I am thinking of using cafepress.com to do a bunch of posters. Anyone have any experience with them?

With the overlay thing, with real work, get it done. If you are hired to illustrate a design, it does not matter much. Take a look at costume design sketches-in general they are pretty simply (poorly?) drawn. They exist for other reasons than the Art.

But it is so widespread that it might be go to stay ahead of the curve a little and not even use it in commercial work.

Duracel, I feel the opposite about the round brushes. The round brushes to me are much easier, almost filter-like. You can't make a disharmony, like a whole tone scale. The challenge is to use the textured brushes well and with some restraint and thought (same as with overlay?) They are an added dimension that needs to be controlled. But as a few have told me, they don't think I am using them well.

Theo-good deal, you are young enough that it will pay off in the long run. Careful of the backlight/silhouette, it can be fast and effective but a crutch as well. Not that you asked my opinion, but I got a big mouth.

Llama, tell us of your adventures at ACCD.

pixelfarmer, I have cleaned out the htaccess file on my site. Please refrain from whatever was done to cause the problem in the first place (most likely a webcrawler used to DL the whole site) Which reminds me, Duracel, could you take that zip down? It really should not be out there like that. thanks

The degree to which the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection determines how shiny something is. The more the 2 are different, the more matte. But viewing angle matters as well. The lower the angle of the visual ray, the more reflective a surface is. I think it is called the Fresnel effect. It is very important. Look at any surface, even a very matte one, at a very low angle and you will see the shine.

not much to show today, paint to post

spooge... I've done some posters with Cafepress and they seem to hold up well. I've had one on my wall for a couple of years without noticing any color fade or change.

to Craig, cafepress are ok, i've had a few done through them, quality is about standard of photographic places (similar the deviantartprints/zazzle), if you're after a place that will sell without you doing much apart from picking up cheques i'd recommend complexarts.com, flushie uses them too, it's run by one guy who really looks after the quality, prices aren't bad either, and i reckon he'd cut off a toe to get you on the books Smile

been a while, about 1h30 into this, got no idea where i'm going with it yet

By no means done, but it will not be a speedpaint for much longer...
I'm having problems creating an interesting pose, armour rendering, refining etc...I think it all comes down to lack of drawing skills.

ignio, axhv, watmought etc - nice work

Spooge: the bigger mouth yours, then better. At other words, your words are valuable as your works for me. Now I have got good time to cogitate over your last words..angle hmmm

I used to believe that large areas are most midtones, small areas tend to be more contrasty... Am I very wrooong? but I had to think so at so simple way

when I post one speedy made at one ocassion and post here, at next day, I look at my speedy and feel often embarrased and thought why I did such so, how I'd miss there and here . hehe I have paint some at many ocassions at every time .. Im started already slowly...

ahhv, like your last. but how did you managed to get awful too saturated dots? is that color burn or dodge?

duracel, thank you for the contributions here. Im learning much from you to make simple things. Im too impatient to push high/shadow too fast. Thats why your works always remind me that I have to work slowly.. good luck with your works. im enjoying so much.of.........
awesome works, other guys here! Im enjoying

oldie oldie..
that remind little of Matthew. Where is he ? Im missing him

Sorry about these.

In my defense, I did them on a tabletPC in a harshly-lit waiting room.

Glare to spare.

Spooge could you explain how you think about exposure when painting. I know the eye has a limited range but I don't know how to paint the shadows and lights sometimes. Take for example the sky in this picture. anyone feel free to help me.

edit: does this make more sense?
