For even starting a thread like this, (3 weeks late, to boot) but the curiosity was too much. The progression of time has always fascinated me.

Last year's New Year's Resolutions thread

Dig through it, if you dare. See what you've accomplished in the past year, and what you haven't. You might be surprised.

I didn't:

1. Make three great photographs (or one, even)
2. Get in a fist fight
3. Alter my pants all that much.

It's an interesting phenomenon, resolution. We're almost certainly setting ourselves up for disappointment when we make them; we either set too high a goal, or we resolve to achieve the goals of other people. When you look back on yourself one year ago then, it's only natural to assume underachievement when the conclusion clearly doesn't match the hypothesis. Maybe that's where the fundamental problem lies. It's not so much that we're not making progress so much as we're all just really bad at guessing what that progress will be.

Which is to say...

I didn't:

1. Make any great photographs, but I DID complete some personal projects and learned more in the last year than I did in the last five.

2. Get in a fist fight, but I did make some decisions that asserted more confidence and maturity than broken teeth ever could.

3. Alter my pants all that much, but I have started wearing corduroy. It's a start.

For this year:

1. keep learning.
2. keep moving.
3. keep stylin'.

1. Practice my Architectural rendering styles, 3D and Painter, So I can have better and different styles to show potential customers. ( which I'm already doing, but havent finished yet)

2. Do more advertising in places I havent hit yet. I keep forgeting to do this.

3. Walk on the moon

I figure all of these are reasonable and I should have done them all in 6 months.

Oh why must you torture us so with this....

MINE FOR LAST YEAR:

"Finish a new body of oil paintings.

Finish a new body of digital paintings.

Get my photography up to highend pro standards (meaning I'd be confident enough where I wouldn't even bat an eyelash if someone asked me to shoot a cover for a high profile magazine).

I'd like to compose more music, but I have a feeling I'll be too busy for that.

I'd love to work more on my novels and screenplays, but it's the same problem as with music."

WHAT I DID:

I worked on some oil paintings, finished two and hated both. After I finish moving back to the States I will try round two and see if I have any keepers.

I did finish a couple of digital paintings, but I really should've finished a lot more.

I did manage to shoot some pro photography gigs, and I did nail them and felt proud of the results. If I was asked to shoot a high profile magazine, I would still feel nervous, but I think I could do it at this point.

I did work on some new music, but didn't finish any. I did however add a ton of highend sample libraries to my setup and familiarized myself with them.

Wrote only a couple of treatments. Still need to finish screenplays and novels.

FOR 2006:

Get a new job after moving back to the States--either art director or concept artist for games.

Sign the contract for the mural project in Napa (two of them for the exterior of a hotel).

Make the Gnomon DVD's (early stages of talking--nothing's set yet).

Nail the workshop for CGOverdrive2006 in Singapore (never done one in front of 1,500 people, so I hope I don't pee in my pants).

Complete my home recording studio (still need a pair of Mackie HR824's and an 88-key midi controller).

Become a better drummer.

Compose at least one full-blown orchestral piece I'd be proud of.

Finish more digital paintings.

Finish at least one oil painting I'd feel good about.

Sketch more.

Make lots of new music. Finish my western epic.

Write something.

Resolve to do my assignments on time.

get closer to retiring so I can really work hard at doing what I love doing and being happier...

hehe,
here's what i had planned;
1) Advance in painting
2) Break off from ever using any references and work from imagination
3) Lose the extra pounds from holidays
4) Try to get into the top 20 in class
5) Do good on SAT's
6) be an a-hole
7) crush my arch-enemy Razz

1. i discovered i needed to advance in drawing before painting. Although I did improve a bit in painting digitaly, I picked up oil painting which i discovered i'm okay at since I've had no experience with oils before. But, as I said, basics. So i'm down to drawing everyday for about 2-3 hours.

2. that was from a lack of knowledge. You need references Razz. I guess I meant that I should get some draftsmanship going and start to get the stuff in my head down on paper correctly.

3. i gained a bit of weight. heh

4. I'm about #19 in my senior class, with a gpa of about 3.7 - 3.8 . SO this is something I accomplished... Razz

5. I did good. Got an 1100 on the second try (english + math). yay

6. i was too much of a nice guy. So i told myself I need to chill, and let things roll; and not let people step over me. I've accomplished that. I'm still a nice guy, but I let people know where the line is Smile.

7. I never defeated my arch-enemy. He moved. Oh well.

Nice!

Let's see. I think I have accomplished nearly everything of my 2005 List.

- improve my skills: Of course I have. Not enough though. It will never end...
- get the driving license: I even got a Car. I am a happy guy : )
- socialize my life: Yeah, kind of...still working on it...
- finnaly graduate: YES!!!
- more reading: I never seriously though I would start reading more but I have. I am reading quite alot these days.
- write a screenplay: At least the first 3 Pages : )
- more photography: Had alot of fun with that. Still need to get more experience in this area though.
- do stuff i wouldn't do normally: Military service - crawling around in mud, freezing to death, shooting with a rifle? yeah I think that counts, eventhough it's 2006.
- draw more
- draw more
- dammit, draw more,...: Hmm, I think I should draw even more.

For 2006

- Start living
- Manage to get into Art school and study ID, gonna ba a hard task.
- Get experience in the Real World out there.
- Do stuff. Reading, Drawing, Painting, Writing, maybe even playing piano again. Hmm,....there's plenty more.

This is going to be a very interesting year! Very Happy Good luck everybody!!!
