Hello there!

got wind of this fantastic forums from a friend. I have recently been getting into digital art and have been looking over several "how to" websites. Here is a sample of one my recent works. Please critiqe to your liking, tips are always welcomed.

It's too blurry and uses too much dodge/burn. Think artistically, don't overuse the tools.

Ah yeah, I know this sadly I have a slightly problem with it. I try to smooth things out and end up going over board. But Ive been trying to do one digital painting a day to improve my skills. Also I been looking over all the tutorials and havent really found anything that focuses on which type of brush is good to use where. Ive been going on my gut when I draw somthing.

to learn something about color and shadows you should start without burn, dodge, smudge... just use the standart brush with opacity and size variance...

I second what eyewoo said...don't be afraid to leave things a little raw (especially if it's at the expense of not going the other direction and over-blurring like the one on top).

I'll say this, being in about the same amateur position as you probably are: Digital art has been very freeing for me, but not always because it's digital. It's been helpful just because it can be a natural media studio (mind you I have Painter IX) that doesn't take work to set up, or time to clean up. If you want to improve basic skills just draw from life, sketch with pencil (even digital pencil)...but I recommend staying away from digital special effects until the basics are improved.

I say this because I find when I use too many effects I think they look nicer than what I've drawn, and then my work is dominated with the "glass and chrome", as it were and it looks cheap.

I hope that wasn't too condescending, good luck improving with digital art.

Oh course, I draw all time, Ive been drawing most my life, But it was just recently that I really dived into driving myself to get better saldy. Yet its also a good ting.
