Haven't posted here in a while. So here it is. My Mom was asking me to make a large painting of flowers for our living room for a while, so I decided I'll make one for her for christmas. I took a picture of a purple clematis... then completely tore it up. Took forever, in the end I was thinking I'd be better off starting from scratch.. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the arrangment of the image, visual weight and such.. I'm also playing around with colors.. got some damn cool results, but I don't think my mom would appreciate something done in blood tones Smile Please help

Mods: Could you please move this to the Work in Progress section, as at this point I think I'll be changing it around and would in fact want feedback and suggestions. Sorry about the wrong forum

kinj: Thanks for the comment. I basically took the image and then separated it into RGB and CMYK colors only via curves in photoshop, at that point it looks horrible, completely messed up and ugly, but it yields a significant color separation. Then I just identify shaptes and isolate them. And when this bitch work is done, I just played around with the arrangement of shapes and such and adjusted the colors. This is too tedious to be of any use to anyone really, I will never make this mistake again. Just start from scratch.

Out of the three I like the second one best.

The first was a bit too contrasty between the large area of black and white. I normally like white space and have done it myself plenty of times, but ...

The second has color above instead of white and you added more color into the black area, so I just like this one better. It still has that mass of black which is good. The area on the lower right could even be sent back to black. The white line with the red adjacent to it looks like a bloody root which I thought was good. The impact of it is lost a bit when you set the area to the right to red.

The third looks like a film negative, I've never been a big fan of that. Maybe you like it though.

Of course if you are shooting for maximum impact then the second one maybe isnt best since its sort of a middle ground between the other two.

Tzan, aren't they all the same image? The second is the first, with some additions, and the third is the second but inverted. But I agree, that it looks better as the second, and in its original colors, not the inverted ones.

Thanks a lot for your comments, guys! I must admit, that i like the third one the most, in fact, i sort of went with this one as my base for further changes... I don't even know what to think/do right now.. Do you really like the green better or you just don't like inverses?.. Obviously, color preferences are very personal, but i'm thinking that you might for various reasons dislike color inversion may be?.. I don't know, in any case, if you think about it, these colors are not strictly inverses of each other, but rather products of hue shifting.. What inverting did do was flip the light top and dark bottom.. I just felt that the picture was becoming so abstract that at this point, if you havent seen the original palette, you would not be able to tell that something is funny with the colors... I actually intended to flip the thing vertically to completely get rid of any intended resemblance with anything.. I guess I gotta give it some thought now, you guys got me thinking hard here Wink thanks again for the comments!

I think this specific color inversion does not work very well. There's a little bit too much white in the inverted image, and the brown color at the top doesn't really work too well, in my opinion. You also lose track of what the image is OF once you invert, which can be good in some cases, but here, because your flowers are already stylized, I think it takes away from the image.

That being said, I think the image is great, the composition and the way the flowers are done, all very good Smile

I see what you are saying now. Loosing the subject matter of the initial picture is actually something i am willing to explore.. but I am definitely now doubting this color scheme and the whole inversion deal., I'll work on it for a day or two and see where it takes me Smile thanks for your very valuable input!

Like I said, inversion whether absolute, or just sort of, is not a favorite of mine. But if you are looking for an eye poping look that third one does it Smile

When it comes to very abstract work dont worry too much about another persons preference.
