A Question
An image exported from Corel Draw in JPEG format must be cleaned (the jaggies/line breaks) to create a good outline in Paint Shop Pro, especially for web upload. In the past I used the Corel Draw line art, cleaned in PSP and colored in Painter...the hard way..Now..is there an easier way?
Here is what I am experiencing exporting from Corel..jpeg..Painter..Like this:
In Painter IX, the image looks great..good clean lines but when I do selections there are white areas or colored areas that seem to indicate the image is not clean (stray pixels/jaggies) or the marquee is not making a close clean selection. Does anyone know why this is or how to fix the lines? Should I do the same clean up in Painter as I do in PSP? Should I export in a different format from Corel Draw?
This is tech question..not sure it belongs here but appreciate any input on cleaner images in Painter. I don't remember having this problem in Corel 9 to Painter but Corel 9 created clean images and I copy/pasted rather than export.
If this is too complicated to be answered here..anyone know any good tutorials?

That's because the lines are antialiased. Are you doing your coloring with the fill tool? Don't do that. Make the line art a multiply layer in PSP and just paint your colors beneath it. No clean-up, no mess.

Also, export as TGA, GIF or TIFF. JPEG adds subtle compression artifacts that can muddy your lines.

I use Corel Painter IX for color
I draw the line art in Corel Draw
I don't use fill very often..I use clone instead and even that...rarely

Gif works better than jpg
I don't color on the line art layer.. I color on the layers above but I have to go to the line art layer to make the selection That selection will be jagged. Are you saying to color on the layer below rather than above the line art layer?
I will try your suggestions:
export line art as gif,
set line art layer to multiply..
color on layers below
So far the "save as gif". works fine!

Yes, it's much easier to color below the lines, becuase you don't have to get the edges of your shapes perfect.

That sounds really strange..Which is above or below?? But I reversed the "natural order." In Painter..I can't paint on a canvas layer of an image that is created somewhere else..in jpg..gif ..whatever (don't know why but I like that automatic lock) So I copied/pasted a duplicate layer. I turned the canvas layer off...Placed the duplicate on the TOP of the stack (set on multiply)..above #3 in this case instead of just above "canvas -0-1" and darned if it doesn't paint better although it is a subjective feeling so far..but still..painting above or below the line art layer is a...strange thing to say..like saying "which way is UP?"...The furthest layer away from the canvas or background layer is "above" LOL
Next..Multiply works great..having the line art layer on top is subjectively satisfying and gif is better ..So far your method looks like it will work but I don't quite trust it..I will have to complete a file using your method and upload it...or take it into PSP ..and look at it closely..before I render final judgment about giving up the old.."resize, clean with paint brush and eraser, and/or blur-contract/expand routines before coloring line art"
I use PSP for nuts and bolts stuff because I know PSP well..therefore it is "faster and easier" ..but not having forgotten hours of painful learning in PSP..this is not a plug for PSP or Painter. I am learning Painter..

By "paint under the line layer", I mean that the canvas is the bottom of the stack, and the lines set to multiply are the top. Your colors can either go on a layer in the middle, or on the canvas itself.

Just about every every comic book in print is colored this way.

That is the way it stacks up. I have the line art layer on top.. set to multiply..and paint on layers below it..between line art and canvas which is either 0 or 1.
Your site looks good. If that is your method, it will work fine.

I am going to post a thank you to all the ones on the board who spent time telling me how to do stuff..starting with the layer tip:
I stacked the layers ..the line art set to multiply but all other layers are on default because multiply changes the colors but it works fine..
On another link..someone told me how to set the cover pencil in Painter IX PixlArt posted how to make a brush library of favorite brushes..
So now I have three brushes I can find in my own brush library..a cover pencil set to 1 pixel and an eraser set to 2.5 to 5...Those are the only brushes I use except I use a blender occassionally so three brushes in the library..That is easy to find..as the brushes get lost on the big list in the main library..
Then I asked on another thread about copyright of a photo of a movie star and eyewoo said nix so I used Saints..and I am learning more about art and painting than I ever could from studio photos that are makeup and glare rather than line and color..Medieval art is what Da Vinci learned first...and some stuff Da Vinci doesn't mention is in the work before the reneassaince..So much better to study Medieval art..
Now I have a second drawing..line art in Corel Draw..and colored in Painter IX..with a one pixel cover pencil..using all the stuff I learned about using the programs..and from using Saints instead of copyrighted studio photos or my own amatuer photos..

I am not certain I should continue with the top one..(I might go back to the one below) ..The Medievial artists used more line and less color..I can only find ochres in most of their art..although they had a pure pale pink..no pure white and very little black..The green for the eyes is my addition to the pallette..

It isn't finished..but it is only my second drawing of a person ever..IT is completely digital..no scan, no photo, no live model..created in Corel from proportion studies of several medieval church paintings and colored in pixels.I don't have a printer so I don't know if it will ever exist except in cyberspace...Thanks again to all the ones who answered my questions..I don't know how to post images here..that is the next question..
