Deadline: 1st December.
Topic: Alien Ruins.
You have 3 months to create a beautiful finished piece of work. A thread
for submissions will be created 2 weeks before the deadline.
Soon after the deadline, all the entrants names will go into a poll. The
winner of the poll gets to feel like a big man, and will roam the threads
of Sijun with much bravado. In exchange for this adoration and respect,
he must use his first-place judgement to make a critique of all the other
entries.
There is no obligation to post your progress work and there aren't any
special provisions made for the purpose. However, the Work in Progress
board seems as a good a place as any.
The only rule is that artists are clear about their methods. All means of
creating an illustration are acceptable. If people do not approve of your
methods, then they will not vote for you. Common decency wins.
Have fun!

I'm glad we made this 3 months.
All i've got so far is a 3 week old scribble, in biro, on half an A4. Although I think I know pretty much what I'm gonna do for it when I finish painting my aunt's fence.
How's it going for everyone else? |

Mine is about 70% finished actually.
What's left is detail work which will very likely kill the flow and atmosphere of image.
That always happens when I try to finish something. Maybe it works this time.
The crazy thing is that I am constantly change my attitude about the painting.
Somtimes I think it sucks, then looking at it from under my arm, messing around wirh layers and stuff it looks pretty cool.
Then again I come back to it and it looks like crap. Weird.
Good luck everyone. |

Yeah, I guess that's because the speedpaingting is usually very suggestive, and the viewer desides most of what's happening in it. But when you finish it, all that is lost, and you just tell everything to the viewer what he is supposed to see, and that is usually boring.
And by "you" I don't mean you. That was commonly speaking

Same here. And usually the time I think that it sucks, then I start changing it, and then it goes from good to terrible. |

Yeah, I am sure you're right Petri, but there are artists out there who know how to keep that suggestive thing while adding great detail where it's needed and don't loose the illusion.
Actually that's what mattepaintiners always talk about

Oh yeah - that's so true it isn't funny. I made about 4 different versions of my alien ruins painting today because I am not really satisfied with my current concept anymore, but I decided to keep it as it is because I am nearly finished anyway. Good decision cause I know it would have gotten worse. lol
I really can not await to see the other entries. |

Yeah, but that's the real trick, now isn't it. We would have a job on the field if we just knew how it is done, but I guess that'll come in time.
And I'm in school, so I wouldn't have time to do mattepaintings for ILM anyways ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) |

So, how's it going everyone?
I just started to rework my whole concept.
I hope I'll be able to finally nail my idea.
This is getting weird since I've worked on it for 20
hours and now just realised it sucks.
A new countdown begins.
Godwin: lol. I was talking about mattepainting skills anyway. thanks! |

Lol max, I'm at the same stage. Got a practically finished thing on my hands and am now realising how dull it is and have started to paint over large areas.
I too am thinking about doing a new one, I haven't decided yet.I should have started with some sketches but I just ploughed on in there with my brain in neutral! Fun though.
How long are people going to want to get their images in?
I'll make an entries thread a week before the deadline, which somehow 'closes' on the 1st. If you disagree with this let me know. |

Well... I think I'm finished with my entry... Where do we enter them.. upload them?
I'm going to show it on some other forums and see if I can't get a few people to come over and join in... _________________ HonePie.com

I think i've totally written off my picture.
How is it that you (me) can start with an idea you like and with every moment as the image begins to take shape, the image spirals away until you end up with something rubbish. Is it just me?
Maybe i should see if i can squeeze a new one out of the following 3 weeks, and in the meantime, WIP out my progress to see if I can get some more brains on it.
Re: image submission
Acutally I was thinking about opening a submissions thread a week before the dealine (rather than 2 weeks). 2 weeks of the submissions kicking around before any kind of progress could drag out a bit.
The voting can begin on the day of the deadline.
And are there any strong feelings about how long the polls last? A week?
And within the week following, the winner posts his critique of the other artists' work.
Provisional:
Submission thread opens: Thu 24/11
Deadline & Polling starts: Thu 1/12
Polling ends & the Chief is crowned: Thu 8/12 |

Yeah, that's a great timeline Fred. Should work this way.
Oh and,.no, it's not just you. As I said, I am still struggling and I am really stuck.
I have made a break to focus. At the moment I am just 'thinking' about how I can save the pic instead of endlessly messing around.
Quite depressing. It's just because I always start something which is way above my skill level and compare it to the professionals out there.
Dude, I hope I'll be on time... |

You will. When I get stuck sometimes I print my picture out and draw all over it, tried that? Sometimes it just takes time to get Out of a very rigid mindset that seems to build up around a picture.
And I think I've overcome my problem with my pic.
After having not touched it for about a month, I just started doing things differently to how I usually work, and good stuff started to happen. It seems that whole-heatedly deviating (in any direction) from my normal workflow is a more consistent recipe for success than sticking to it.
Cool. i also made some frivolous little badges for winners (in the discussion thread.) |

Fred: I hope so. I finally nailed the main parts and colors of my pic. It works - well, more or less, not really, but,...arghh, I have to finish it anyway. I just have to make it look polished. At the moment the detail is scattered over the whole pice and confusing me. I'll go into crunch time mode to be on time. I wonder how many people will actually join at the end. Gonna be exciting.
Oh, about the printing trick. I haven't tried that yet however it would't help me with this pic since it's...well, abit to komplex...too many shapes, colors, messy stuff,... |
