I used to have one of the Evolution MIDI keyboards (the ones that are just MIDI and nothing else), but I broke some of the keys. Rather than get another keyboard, I wouldn't mind just getting a program (perhaps even a tracker) which can send MIDI notes to an external device (I use an old Korg NS5R sound module). The thing is, I have custom sound banks that I use which have my own libraries of samples, however, every MIDI program I use on the PC always resets the sound banks to the General Midi soundbank. Are there any small freeware or shareware programs (preferably stave-based) which will just send out timings and note info without trying to be smart about changing the soundbanks.
(failing that, links to a music forum would be good) |

I myself just got into MIDI so i don't know alot. I know you can get soundfonts manager and maybe download those fonts from somewhere and use it from computer, not sound module. I also use FruityLoops and it has some plugin called MIDI Out and when i use it i can choose port/channel/patch, would it be it? |

[Shizo]: Yep, you can select which MIDI device you want to send to. The MPU-401 is basically an output channel to another sound device, e.g. a keyboard, sound module, another PC etc.
It's not a problem getting the MIDI to play stuff on the KORG, it's just that you can select a list of samples that you want to use (e.g., General MIDI, Custom 1, Custom 2, Custom 3 ... Custom 127). I set it to, say, Custom 10, but when I go to play a song, it resets the list of Samples to General MIDI which is the basic set of sounds. You know, piano, honkey tonk, all the way to sound effects.
About your MIDI problem, check that you're not outputting to the wrong device. It should be either your soundcards Wavetable device (if you've got a kick-ass soundcard) or the MPU-401 for anything that's connected to it, like a sound module, keyboard or some other device.

Search for an online dictionary of terms such as resonance, LFO, ringmodulation, ASDR, notch filter, etc...it's always good to understand the terms better. then...just waste lots of time tweaking crap in buzz one machine at a time to see what it does and also try remaking popular songs to learn good structure and whatnot. that's all the advice I have...and even that advice sucks =P
Oh, and visit my site for buzzstuff: www.hamsteralliance.tk |
