This is my rough layout for the Sijun challenge: alien ruins. It is of a surviving alien and his pet starting a new day in the ruins of his society...

stephan... Nice. You should start your own challenge thread here in the Sijun WIP section. As I continue work on my entry, I'll keep posting updates to this thread until it is finished. The picture above is the start layout... ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ HonePie.com

Very nice. I really like it so far.
Maybe add a bit more detail to the left part to keep balance?
Can't await the finished pice! |

I'm also not quite sure what it is as yet... but, I have every confidence that I will figure it out in the following days... ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ HonePie.com

or slimy, scaley, toothy and bloody. Nice linework, what are the raw dimensions of this piece? _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

For the initial line work, the size is 4800 x 6000 pixels in grayscale. When I start to color, I drop it back to 2400 x 3000 in RGB. At both sizes, the picture takes most of my available 2 GIG of RAM which works out to be about 1.5 GIG.
Looking forward to the day when working with a lot more RAM is possible. _________________ HonePie.com

I'm loving the picture so far. The color should really set it off.
ONE MAJOR NOTE for the final line work.
You have GOT to maintain the gesture of the character whizzing. Right now, he's stiffened and lost all sense of attitude.
otherwise, should be a hot piece. |

Interesting point... I thought he had a bit too much attitude and pulled him back a bit. Maybe too much, eh... _________________ HonePie.com

Here is the rough idea for the initial color scheming... with no indication of the "dramatic" lighting that will be included in the final...
Also, I think I corrected the posture of the alien wizzer...

Thanks watmough...
This is one of several styles I work in. This style has evolved out of a lot of illustration work I've been doing for text book publishers - sort'a quick down and dirty. However, I'm spending quite a bit more time on this picture to see how I can evolve the style beyond the "QD&D". I'm getting into it somewhat more than I originally intended... and liking it quite a bit... having fun! _________________ HonePie.com

MUCH better.
To be "picky", his left hand could support his arch a whole lot more while favoring his right tippy toe to get a good shake.
Interesting color choices. Particularly the warm yellows in the bottom right. what scheme are you going for?
Photoshop Technical question:
Being that you started with a drawing, are you using "channels" for all you object selection? |

No known scheme that I know of... I generally tend toward warm colors with some nice cool colors scattered about for contrast and interest. The yellow color in the lower right simply denote a layer on which those items rest. As I continue working, that color will pretty much totally change, tending toward warm grays.

Not exactly sure what you mean... Each of the objects or groups of objects are isolated on separate layers - one layer for the line drawing and another for flat color. Then, as I progress with finishing the picture, the flat color areas are colored and textured and often broken up into other areas. In the end, with all the layers, I can do some fine texture, color and lighting tweaking...
Ain't digital great... it can be so different from traditional drawing and painting. _________________ HonePie.com

that color of that yellow green thing beside the way really bugs me. I completely love the rest of the artwork so far. |
