So I'm looking for jobs right now...mostly in the game industry doing concepts, character design, and illustration type stuff. I've sent out a bunch of stuff (I'm looking for a permanent type job rather than freelance), but I'm not sure how I should approach the process of calling companies after I've sent my resume & portfolio to them or even if I should be calling them for that matter.
I realize that companies like the ones I'm interested in have tons of resumes coming in from all over the place...and some of them don't even provide phone numbers. Should I call them? Should I go to the trouble of trying to dig up a phone number for them? Do they appreciate persistence or do they get annoyed by it?
If anyone has any tips for breaking into the industry, I'd really appreciate them. I imagine other people might be interested in learning too...
Thanks in advance! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ -Krista

Don't call. The day is too busy for that.
DO follow up, though. Email is best. If someone has to choose among roughly equal talents, the person who shows interest has an edge.
Don't send VHS tapes. They are a pain to hunt down a player for. Send copies of original work or computer-viewable work. DVD's are good. Don't send originals or one-of-a-kind things.
---
Companies often want local people. They will rarely relocate someone these days, especially if they have a strong local talent pool. It can help to live in the same city as the company you want to work for.

Go to conventions (E3, Comdex, etc) and show your work in person to company reps.
Go prepared with copies of resumes, biz cards, and if possible mini-portfolios. |
