Thank you so much for your replies and compliments everyone!
Synnical: thanx, well yes it all depends how a company wanna use a concept artist,we begin with 2-3 fast ones and then finish off with a detailed one, sometimes even "zoom ins" so that the modelers know what's going on. sometimes I get a jpg with rings around what they want detailed up. For me it's a great project/challange, since I really need to push the details and work on FORM, as the Great Spooge Demon once said: Don't hide under purdy paint.
Annisahmad: Sometimes I get a siple mockup of what they are after, but it's not helpful in any way with colors and ligt, but with perspective. Tho sometimes I start over by hand to practise on what i wrote to Synnical further up in this post (practise form and stuff).
Crusher: Thank you! I kinda worked hard for the pilot license, since I'm not very smart hahaha (had to give up something didn't I?) freaking theory tests are so confusing!
Robinchyo: I didn't do any Character or Vehicle design, that was covered by a super talent, and he seem real nice too, his name's Jay Hawkins, can't find his site now but wow!! I bet they had more guys but I only know of him
Sumaleth: hehe, I have at least 25 more paintings but they'll have to be released later sorry
Cybear: Hehe thanx cybear, hope you're doing aait at the kungl.konsthgskolan, I bet you'll learn a ton over there! the flashiness of the site isn't anything I really care about, since I'm just super happy to have a website this advanced, I know about the search engine stuff, but, nah, I want this one
Mon: paintings like this can vary from 2-5 days, sometimes I even force myself to start over and make a better angle or something, really important to not fall in love with your WIP's, if it hurts it's the wrong kinda love u have to find a new one
Sukhoi: yo man! yeah this is freelance work, haha no problem m8 I bet they couldnt find a better artist than you for their project
P4b10: I explained some in the text above how I do it, hope that's enough
Max Kulich: yeah its for the unreal engine 3 allright, freaking scary technology there! I dunno about the expensiveness, is it super expensive? Exept this Gears of War project, I'm really looking forward to se what other companies are gonna do with Unreal engine 3 wow!
Mikko K: yes I work from home (sweden) I've actually never spoken to them on the phone or met them, everything is handled via e-mail, haha.
Iridian, some paintings have photo textures in them, mostly I try to paint everything by hand , in this post, the 2 top ones are hand painted and 2 bottom ones have been made with help of some photos.
Also I am going to pass the compliments about the site to the designer Erik Tolstedt, it will warm his heart for sure
Cheerio all!!

Absolutely outstanding John ----- I paint at MidwayGames, and since they're publishing 'Gears' we've gotten to see a few of these down the road. For so long I was like "WHO THA FUCK IS THAT!?"
The bosses got us a few of these paints in process (with the like circles for detail and such) from Epic - and they said "paint like that" ---- I was like OMGWTF!!?
Now we got StephanMartineire helpin us out over there to reach this level of quality - he really dug your stuff.
Amazing use of everything ---- awesome phototexture worked in really nicely, great atmosphere, all of it........ In all honesty, I like the universe you designed much much more than what 'Gears' is turning out to be --- I wish they'd kept some of your wonderful subtlety and respectable 'real-world' aesthetic.
You really raised the bar ---- This is what NextGen concept-art is all about. |

+1chromosome: oh really? u got "ring ins" to re paint or what? lol, well it'snot easy trying to adapt to someone else's "style" I'm always really careful when people ask if "i can paint like that" real scary shiet! thanx for your compliments!
Lysander: yikes! well I have half painted stuff of pics I really can't show yet, but that's all, I'm really bad at saving step by steps, since it busting up my workflow haha!
See: great to hear you're saying that, i really wanna be better hehe, oh BTW, I was in Austria in june, Amoe made the trip perfect for me and showed me around Graz Zeltweg and Wien, DAMN those cities are all potensial homes for me, wien= huge as london, but still clean water! and also If a building is renovated with plastic covers allover it doesnt matter, you can still photograph the EXACT FREAKING BUILDING NEXT TO IT!! it's all made in pairs lol!
Nocturnal: Gee thanx m8, it was a long time i had a tute going on but thanx for enoying the ones i did. Sijun is -the- place tho, I don't think i'd be where I am without sijun
Cheerio m8s!!

Theres just no stopping you john, you're on a roll of thunder now. ;) I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the work as well! I agree with earlier comment though on them not keeping the general "atmosphere" (/world) from the images in the game art as much as they could have.
Also I believe alot of the serenity will probably be berlost in the game, which is kind of a shame. Places like that you just want to explore.
However, that's their problem - your contribution has been exceptional! great work. <3

Capt.FlushGarden ---- Heh, ya we get the "ring ins" ... I like 'em, since I get to zoom in and design so much... but I'll be damed if they don't muddy up a paint sometimes ---- sometimes they get too detailed to look like a paint at all (loss of 3rd level-reads, too much contrast... you know the drill) I usually end up saving a half-way piece in the process for the 'portfolio' rather than use the final image
'Gears' was actually my first freelance-gig ... so I know how long ago you were pumping these out!!! Must suck to have to wait so long before you can upload 'em.
I actually handled a couple of lineworks/marker details of your buildings before the consultancy through to Epic screwed me over |

Awesome work Flush! I am curious however about the job itself. How did you find it, or how did it find you? Were you able to work from your home or did you need to relocate. Did you enjoy it? Thanks in advance. _________________ Life is only what you make of it. |

Hey flush! These are some of the best concepts ive seen in a while. I really enjoy the architecture and the texture in all the pics. Your values aswell are very spot on. Only small crit is in hte pic with the fountain the chain seems to be hanging at a funny angle, but then again, who cares about a stupid chain when the rest is top notch?

Still doing amazing work Cap'n. That work is tight for concept. Your AD must be in heaven working with you, not to mention the environment team. Nice work.

First of all, incredible environmental and architectural concept art. I have no idea how you created certain parts of the picture. I am taking into account basic techniques and trickery like: distort selection and custom brushes, but still don't understand certain parts.
I do not want to diminish your rendering skills or eye for aesthics, but I do have some questions.
In this image the texture on the grass is insane in certain places. It goes beyond what a simple custom brush can do as the highlight/shadow placement is far to random and complex. Either you spent some serious time on this area or I want some of that sauce.
As I said before I do not want to diminish your rendering talent but areas are extremely well done and my feeble mind would like to believe you had some pre-rendered objects to help you along with perspective and basic values. Did you happen to have any? The rendering and dimension of the upper, designed portion of the columns are fantastic. I heard your color choices were that of your own and they are very, very impressive.
The patterns along the mini-vaulting, did you create a texture for the pattern and copy and paste, distorting it to fit the structure?
Lastly the texture on the ground is totally zomgwtfbbq. More distortion on a created texture or what? The ownage is too great.
There is no way around saying these pictures are ridiculously good, congratulations.

thanx for the replies!
Gammon
As for the questions you almmost answered them yourself hehe, It's all about painting on top what u just painted, layer upon layer of detailing, don't worry about the grass tho, some of it is from a photo of a lawn that I made dirty, I would never have time to paint grass like that, but If i would, the process would be like this (after 10 mins or so)
for the round temple pic, it's all hand painted, but I did use a 3D mockup to get the pillars right, again, after some darn hard work it would be possible without a 3D wireframe to go after, but it wouldnt come as easily as Scott robertsson with his printer-hands
for the trees I made one B&W silouette of one tree, and then duplicated some branches and moved them around to make them look different, then i painted a flower wich I made a custom brush of and painted them with that. the patterns are painted from the front first and then transformed into place, and after that, "lit" to fit the environment, the dark part of the ground is painted from the top, then transformed into place, but I added the brighter stones afterwards cause it missed some patterns, after that you paint the shadows from the branches and smudge them a bit, also u can make grass brushes and I also did some flower leaves and duplicated them allover the place and colored them differently.
Adam Miller: they found me actually, didn't understand it was epic games first, thought it was some dude who made a MOD with the unreal engine, turned out it was them after all hehehe... I work from home via the internet. _________________ www.johnliberto.com |

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions. I knew that most of the answers for my questions were talent, but this layering thing, this is interesting. I had briefly experimented with this myself in conjunction with layer masks and now that I see the perfecting of the technique I'll pursue it further.
BTW: The speed painting of the grass was helpful thanks! I have sent you a PM in case you didn't happen to notice, thanks! |
