Next one won't be a tree, OK? I swear. Really.

Anyway, this was commissioned as a preliminary sketch for a tattoo design. Originally, the guy wanted me to design his tattoo outright, but I told him I don't know enough about tattooing to be sure of my ability to draw something practical, and he agreed to just get the idea off me, and have an actual tattoo artist adapt it for his purposes. The concept was "a tree which is normal at the top, but turning into technological stuff at the bottom". The tattoo is going up the guy's spine, so it also had to be of suitable proportions and composition to fit there.

Anyhow. The original drawing is about 18" long, so a bunch 'o' detail is totally missing. I'm including a link to a larger version, so that anyone who wants a good look can get one.

Also, the title shouldn't be taken to imply anything religious. I'm not Christian. This is a DIFFERENT tree of knowledge, and it's OK to eat fruit off it.

Details:

(This detail is RIGHT on the scanline, unfortunately. Distortion & blurring isn't part of the original. Sorry!)

Great detail, I also like how you kind of hid a human body in it... with hair.

But I can't make out what those helmet-like things are. First I thought they were snails, but I figured they can't be. It's probably some "technological stuff"

I think it'll look great on someones back, although I think it would be better to have something like thise along the right side of his back and have some branches grow to the left from the top of the tree. That would look way cooler with this composision of the body.
Maybe you could propose it to the guy. Razz

This makes me wanna have a industrial-style "gears, girders 'n exhausts" tattoo. Eventhough I'd need to have to wait at least a year to have it applied. Smile

I don't know if you did this on purpose, but the top looks like a man with his arms over his head and his head bowed. Like, the limbs at the top are kind of reminicent of arms, and his head and hair is that little tuft of foliate on the left side. Then in curves in, and that's the small of his back, the buldge being his belly (there's even a belly button, lol), and then it looks like two legs coming down that stop just below the knees. I'm just pointing it out because you didn't mention it in your explanation...so maybe it's just an accident? Looks sweet to me though. And I like the contrast between the top and the bottom.

I love this one Socar. I like your choice of substrate too. You have evolved a great deal in the years I've been... missing.

Be Well

Thrush - Thanks very much! Nice to see some old Sijun members filtering back in, too.

Sumaleth - Thank you! Very Happy

MegaMuffin - Yeah, the human figure is in there intentionally. I read somewhere that people relate better to images that have at least the implication of a human being somewhere, so I snuck that in. Glad you like the drawing!

StylesDavis - Thanks very much!

watmough - Thanks! Yeah, I can only imagine what a supreme pain in the ass this would be to adapt for tattooing. Glad I don't have to do it!

Matthew - Thanks! Glad you like it.

Frode - They're little videocameras--you know, those ones you see on top of people's monitors, or in some stores (for security). I probably drew them totally wrong, though. I haven't seen one in a while. Ha, ha. Anyhow, glad you like it! I think the customer's pretty set on having the tattoo up the spine, though.
