Hey Socar-

Have you ever thought of taking your work somewhere that has a large format drum scanner? It's hands down the best way to scan almost anything and you can do HUGE resolution.

If not, most Kinko's have flatbeds at least 11x17.

It would be a good move to get high-quality scans of your wonderful work, IMHO.

Jimmy, yeah, I've thought of it, but with the price the local copy shops want for professional-quality scans, I'd lose all my profits if I did that. For a drawing that only sells for $50, or even $150, it's just too much to spend. If I could be SURE I could make more money later by selling prints, or putting a book together, then it might be a justifiable expense, but my prints have never been big sellers, and I have no reason to believe a book would be, either.

(Bottom line: I'm cheap.)

Well, more or less all of my art is scanned and uploaded to either Photobucket or my own site, but unless my house burns down I don't really have a problem anyway. All my art is in traditional media. As for mp3s and other random files, I back them up every so often on about a billion CD-RWs.

Thanks for all the great info. I am using the backupulator thing that balistic posted about - works great, but it doesn't seem to "stay on" when I boot up. I have to manually start it each time. I probably just need to set something somewhere, but Brian if there is a simple answer to this I'd be very obliged.

The checksum thing sounds a little over my head, but apparently it's a good thing to learn about... Craig you need your own IT department I think. Very Happy

Socar, do you maybe just have a budget scanner? I used to have a Microtek Craptastic 2000 and always had problems with scan quality. I got an Epson Perfection 2400 a few years ago and my scans got a lot better.

Do you mean it's not starting when Windows starts? Try adding a shortcut to it to your startup folder. You should be able to drag and drop the icon from your desktop to your start menu (you have to let it hover over the start button for a second, keeping your finger held down), then go up to program files, then startup, and a panel should fly out to the right showing what's already in your startup folder. Move the shortcut you've been dragging over that list of things and release the mouse button. That should add it to your startup folder, and it will now launch when you boot.

Yeah, Francis, I do have a really low-end scanner. One of these days, when I've got some extra pocket money, I'll pick up a decent one. My current scanner is so bad that I have to adjust the scans heavily in Photoshop just to get the paper colour to look the same as it does in the real world. (The paper is medium brown, but it scans as a sort of muddy yellow. Hideous. Needless to say, I can't scan any paintings with this thing!)

Socar, If the paper colour is the only issue I suggest maybe trying to just print it on a similar paper as the original instead? Also there is also a difference in printers, and I think in newer versions of PS there is the option to let either photoshop or the printer handle the color management. (Atleast there was on Mons computer but maybe that had to do with the printer. There was a pretty big difference in results though.)

Anyway, there should be some print media people here knowing this way better than me that could help you out with this though.

(On the topic of the thread, I do the multiple seperate HDs run.)
