Oh come on, I'm not too sure there are too many people on this board who have used PaintChat at all, or a lot. It's a really, really nice drawing/painting tool, and I'm convinced the popularity will grow over time, if it doesn't become a success right away.

I hosted a personal PaintChat for a while (with no advertising for the pchat, although I brought a friend or two in), and people still found out about it and joined on occasion. Sijun is a relatively large forum, and if a few people get to try PaintChat, I'm convinced that more will use it.

But then again, since when do these kinds of features need popularity to have their existence justified? I'm all for it.

Basically, the PaintChat is operated on a server on a Windows or *NIX-based OS. Any browser with Java installed (yes, it exists for Macintosh computers as well) can visit a web page on the server and thereby connect to the PaintChat. No other software downloads are necessary, you draw directly on the java applet in your browser.

As the name implies, it lets you paint, and converse with other users in the same room in real-time. The interface is not extremely complicated. In fact, if you've used MS Paint, Photoshop, Painter or pretty much any other digital drawing/painting application, you will have an easy time getting adjusted to PaintChat.

I found a place where we can try it out at least, not sure how long it will work.
I am gonna be in there for a while to mess around with the settings, feel free to join:

*link deleted because it didn't work, look beneath for working server.

in the future maybe we could set up this on some server.
Chruser, do you know if it could work through a free webspace provider or are there special settings for paintchat stuff?

Matthew

our fellow sijun member digitaldecoy seems to have a paintchat and it is working fine at the moment, I will be messing around in here for a while:

*link deleted, we need our own paintchat server, more info further down.

Everything seems to be in order.

This is the same room as mentioned above, but the "advanced" version (which in my opinion has a simpler interface) has a nice color picker.

http://paintchat.digitaldecoy.de/paintchat_pro.htm

Also, I uploaded a java upgrade that will enable tablet support. PaintChat requires the install if you want pressure sensitivity for size and/or opacity:

http://213.50.34.38/JTabletSetupv0.9.5.exe

(I'm not familiar with any Mac versions of this upgrade, which isn't by any means necessary)

Annis> It usually stops on 70%-80% if Java has crashed. Closing all of your browser windows and reopening the link usually helps. Otherwise, try a reboot. Oh, and thank you. Very Happy

Well, that makes one crashed PaintChat and one crashed OpenCanvas. I guess we'll try again tomorrow.

Edit: Aw, beat me to it.

Anyway, if anyone has any release of the PaintChat software for either Windows or Linux, please reply and tell me so, or send me a PM, and I'll see if I can set up an official PaintChat for Sijun. Today was tons of fun, and it'd be nice to be able to restart it in case it SHOULD ever crash (as today).

ok the paintchat is down at the moment so now we need to look up another alternative to be able to do this instead of leeching digitaldecoy (I hope he ain't gonna strangle me).
Either it be that maybe creationstorm could host it or if Chruser could come up with something. We will get back to you here when we have more information.

thanks for the interest in the paintchat guys. Smile
have a nice day

Finally got a new one up and running on my home computer. I have a 2.5 mbps connection, so hopefully it shouldn't lag far too bad. I guess you can give it a go here:

http://213.50.34.38/entrance_pro.html

I tried to install PaintChat on my remote server (using UNIX with a bash shell) earlier today, but after a few hours of wanting to rip my hair off my head, all I realized was that I would have to install x-windows on the box. Ugh.

Very nice stuff guys, I just went back in to have a look after watching Bowling for Columbine. Most paintchats don't seem to be so colorful, hmm.

Matt, the loading sometimes stops at 70% or 80% when your java client has already loaded a paintchat (or possibly other java applications) once. If it happens, you need to reclose all browser windows so Java shuts down, before trying again.

I think I've had my java client crash completely on only one occasion during the past 2-3 years, which required a reboot of my system.

By the way, please reply with any bugs you encounter, or just in case you should experience any form of lag/bad latency. It appeared that my typing went a bit slow initially in the room, but it fixed itself after about a minute, and I haven't noticed anything bad since then.

I increased the canvas size a bit to 3000 x 2000 pixels. It should have room for some extra painting now, and it still seems rather stable, but if anyone is experiencing any problems, let me know.
