thanks for the encouragement on the portrait. I think I will try the same idea in oils. I kinda wonder if they used any dark makeup under her eyes in that film. Mikko, hardy in that class, but thanks. Nice painting!
"Fiona has to be back on the grounds Tuedays before 1, as Mrs. Barrow-wight often visits for tea and crumpets. She had better step things up a bit..."
edit-retro, it took a couple of evenings of SP time, bout 2-3 hours. I would hate to think how long it would take me with oils. |

I have a question. When you use textures to create more visual interest, do you have some type of rule about whether darker values or lighter values will receive different treatment?
I just got the director's cut of Legend, and it's been a long time since I watched it. Anyway, I recognized a scene that you used as reference (the Princess from the behind as she goes to touch the unicorns). Put a big smile on my face.
Off-topic:
I thought the director's cut would remedy the film's various problems, and I had always given Ridley Scott the benefit of the doubt when he said that the studio butchered his film. Now that I have seen the director's cut, with the gorgeous transfer to DVD and the original score (I've never seen this film so vivid and crystal clear before, or in widescreen format), I really don't think the director's cut elevates the film to a higher ground (unlike Bladerunner). In fact, I think Legend might be Scott's worst film in his career. Whatever messages about innocence, corruption, seduction, evil..etc that's supposedly the saving grace of the film, did not become more apparent or profound in the director's cut. In the end, it still felt like a silly film that takes itself too seriously. I dunno, maybe it's just me. I would take Labyrinth over Legend any day--at least that one's got Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. |

Really like the idear of "think-more-draw-less", but sometimes ... the exact opposite feels dagm nice.

spooge, viag, mikko, Matthew, sparth, annis, lots of cool stuff!
The rest of you in no particular order, lots of cool stuff! Hmm, I guess things get a bit repetitive at 5:10 am. Ugh.
Some tired tranceesque doodle of my desk.
Rassel kind of talked me into the digital art world again, bless/curse him. I've heard so many different things lately on whether "traditional is better than digital" and vice versa, in terms of "learning much in a short period of time". Any input on this? _________________ What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Chruser: Working traditional from life is the best way to learn how to paint light. Take many many notes on important things such as highlights, reflections, shadows, planes, and so on. take notes on how color effects the percieved value. The sky is a good example of something that looks higher in value then it is. The blue hue will make the value appear lower then say yellow which is at the other end. Your darkest dark when painting in color is blue-purple 100 saturation. And your lightest light is yellow l 0 saturation. Actually because its 0 saturation you can pick any color cause it won't change anything.
One thing I've noticed about color is that it follows a rule where it can't get to another color far away without becoming a bridge color to get there. Like on a flame we got blue then green ( Green is the bridge ) then yellow. orange. if a yellow object is hit with a purple color light then it will go from yellow to very low saturation blue to purple gradualy as it is close to the light source. The Gray acts as a bridge to get to purple.
Anyways yes working traditionaly from life will increase your knowledge of light much faster then working on the pc. You can always try to apply what you learned working outside to your work on the pc. |
