Hello and welcome to the Summer Practise Thread.

I thought it was time for a themed thread here in Sijun again and this time it is devoted to practise and learning, this we will do from reference pictures that I will provide beneath here.

The pictures are taken from Bigfoto.com and according to their FAQ the pics are free to use though they didn't approve of hotlinking from their site, so I added these pics to my picaroni account.
Big thank you to picaroni and Bigfoto for their services. And btw for more reference pictures look up bigfoto but please respect the rule that in this thread only the provided photos are allowed.

The photos I have added here have something that I've found appealing and the focus in this summers practise is Landscape.
Hope you guys will enjoy this and please for feedback and questions don't hesitate to give me a pm.
Matthew

Rules of Summer Practise

*Only Digital Medium allowed
*You are only allowed to use the provided pictures here beneath
*You can post as many times as you want
*You can do as many different interpretations as you want of the reference pic that you choose.
*No time limit as this thread is for learning and the choice is yours when you think your pic is finished
*Don't post any other pictures than the reference studies you have done from the provided picture reference
*You can do all of them or only one, up to you
*Post the thumbnail in your post so that we know from which picture you worked from

ok I hope the rules are clear here, otherwise let me know what to change and how to be more clear regarding the subject.
Have fun everyone and have a nice summer my fellow Sijun friends, this thread I did for you. Smile

Here's the reference pictures, property of http://www.bigfoto.com.
Click the link beneath every thumbnail to retrieve a bigger version of the same.

Yo Matthew, great idea... I'm down.

Petri: that is really cool man. I love the texture on the bark... How'd you do it? Custom brush?

Heres a quickie done in painter 9.

I am glad you guys like the idea with this thread, thanks for joining.

octavian, very nice rendering.

I made another attempt with the same one and more experimental this time, me likes to bend a picture back and forth.

annisahmad, many thanks for keep commenting my works, I am glad you like the idea with this thread here.
I usually do a survey before making new themed threads like this but I figured what the heck with it and just went ahead and posted this summer thread.
Btw very nice to see you keep at it strong with your speedies and your painting, I see a lot of progress in your works. Keep up the good work annisahmad.

Choboroy: I like it already as it is. As I going to be nitpicking I'd say that in the ref there is quite a value difference, look at the clouds and the horizon. Also the water is darker coming from the right than the left. This gives a nice framing effect. It helps to zoom out a lot so you don't get caught up in details like I have in my pic below haha.

annisahmad: Looking very good. I like how you handled the sky.
On the ref pic the perspective is different though, I don't know if you've changed this intentional or not. I agree with Matthew that you're improving very fast. Keep it up!

Matthew: First of all, great idea this summer/winterthread.
About your images, you have a great sense for bringing out the big shapes.
In that last one, I like the colors, I just think the sky could use a slight value change to take away that overexposure-look Smile

Octavian: Wow, you really have Painter in control, very nice pic.
I really like that Sutter Fort Watercolour you posted by the way, though you should really try some other paper, it makes a world of difference.

PetriJ: That's a difficult image you picked, and you handled it very well.
To simplify is the key I guess..

I picked the flowerfield, el cheapo choice I know, but I wanted to experiment with the brushcontrols a little.

Great idea Matthew, thanks.

Trying to get the values right with this one rather than worry too much about texture.

Good one Scallywag.

Fraser Island, I've been here on holiday in '94, what a great place.
Flying with a little Cessna plane that lands on the beach, during the flight you could see really big sharks swimming close to the shore, amazing.

Don't mind the car Smile

really had to struggle not to use the color picker, sun was shining at my monitor but I tried. The sky sucks in my version.

matthew> you're welcome. keep inspiring us Smile. thanks for the comment. i really appreciate it. im trying hard to advance.

choboroy> nice colors. perspective's a bit off, but its still good. keep it up.

buzzz3d> thanks man. i appreciate it. i really like ur stuff too. about the perspective; yeah, its different in the ref. at first, i was really mad when i realized that but i let it go and so didn't correct it. i'm not too great with buildings in perspective Razz. im trying to work hard at correcting that weakness though. btw, i like that beach one too.

scallywag> nice. u got the values pretty good.

idiran> nice! u got the colors nicely. and i like the blunt and rough brush u used. great work!

ok, here's my sorry attempt at the ship.
one thing i got reminded about; don't detail Razz. this took an hour and a half because i started detailing the clouds...

anyhow,

i switched the colors around on purpose... Smile

The first attempt at painting from a photo in ages and one of the few I ever did in general. Guess I should do one each day.

I need practice with this stuff so I'll prob do most of these...
Any comments on brushes/values? Trying to get some kind of
approach instead of mindless noodling.

Thanks alot guys Embarassed
Octavian: No, not custom brush, it was a texture, a picture of a ground with scratches.
Buzzz3d: yeah I guess.. And I usually work first in 50% - 25% to get it working as a whole, and then zoom closer.
Matthew: I like that expirimental painting.
jmascho: I just love your paintings and especially in that first one the lower left corner that over sharpened brush strokes. That's just brilliant detail.

My mother said to me some time a go, that when you paint, make art, and if you want it to look realistic, you have a camera for that purpose. You don't have to paint it. I agree with her in that, but I think that it's important to know how to paint realistic stuff as well, because in that way you learn so much about the small variation of color and value.

Now .. To get rid of my fear of using bright and saturated colors.
Let's make art. Very Happy

here's mine for tonite
I did the perspective too fast so I spent a bit of time going back and redoing some parts ... but I think this I'll leave this one as is now.
this one took about 90 min .... I'm gonna try speeding this up I think I go over old brush strokes too much.

anyhoo - great work 'yall'
cho - I love your textures/style
annisahmad - great work, as always
