made these a while ago. was reminded of them by an interesting book called 'vision and art: the biology of seeing'

Within my family, some people get these easy and some can't, but my eyes seem to find it easier to mismatch the images and see depth than to see correctly and see two flat images.

I find it fasinating. It is as easy to do with a camera as in bryce.
some of the ones with different materials I made to check if i was right;I wanted to see if the appearance of something being reflective had a lot to do with the discrepancy between what is seen by each eye.

The idea is to overlay the two images with your eyes to perceive depth in the 'fusion'.

What the hell is your problem? It's Sunday, and I'm tryin' to relax.

Razz

No seriously - interesting concept. Some were very obvious to me while a couple took effort.

I Love these!
They came through quite easily for me, but I'm running a 19" Diamondtron Flat screen monitor. The blue ones, #3 and #5 were the best for me, but the gold ring in #2 was the best for getting your eyes to shift focus, relax, and then refocus to get the effect to work.

Really well done! Post more here when you can, they'll be appreciated and easy to find and enjoy. Congratulations on a great effect.

wow, that's cool. I could get all of them quite easily though. Only the gold ring took me abit longer.

Odds: just overlay both by focusing in the middle of both and,..ahm,.. "unsharpen". Than you should see three while the centered has depth. Ahm, okay, can't really explain this with my english.

Some bright spark needs to incorporate steropsis into a GUI/monitor, good bye eye strain, and hello to helpful visual cues. given that the only depth cue in current GUI's is occlusion.

Imagine a desktop as far away as the horizon and and the active widow close like a book. the challenge would be to get the eyes to diverge instead of converge - otherwise, far from removing eye-strain, everyone would end up crosseyed!

I can never see these things. I cross my eyes and see 3 pictures, but my vision is so blurry that i can't see depth or any detail at all. Sad

does that work with moving images too. motion picture?
hey, we could make our own imax. can't be good for the eyes though Very Happy

edit: if you get the first one just stay with the way you look at it and scrool down. since the images have same proportions you don't have to refocus on each. pretty nice Very Happy

Haha thats cool. Easy to do on all of them...

Yes cross your eyes untill the images merge in both, you will see 3 images - look at the middle one and adjust the focus untill its sharp. Move your head around... there is an illusion of depth. Fun stuff. I think i am cross-eyed now.

i think i'm retarded. i can't figure it out. Am i supossed to bring the head close to the monitor ? somethings starts to happen but still i see no depth just blured pictures comming closer and closer to the center but they do not meet. Will try harder Mad

edit: i look at the number #4 i see 4 stones in the air two middle ones are moving toward the center but they stop too quick and never meet :/

oDD: no, the image gets sharper when you move away form the monitor. About 50cm should be perfect! At least for me.

You're on the right way. Just look in the center of these four images. After some seconds they should meet. Maybe it takes longer...

I have a 1952 ViewMaster camera that takes pictures like that.

You shoot Kodachrome slides, punch them out with a special film die cutter, and mount them into empty ViewMaster reels.

It's a lot of fun.

Jfrancis, cool!
I have one too. The film winder is broke now, and I haven't gotten around to getting it fixed. Have you taken many photos with it? Do you have the 'punch', or do you gut the frames out by hand to mount them in the reels?

YVerlock: I have the regular punch, which is based on the original top/bottom doubhle decker arrangement of the images onto the film, and the Mark II (European) punch, which uses the diagonal layout. I bought the Mark II punch on eBay by accident before I realized it was only compatible with a Mark II camera.

spooge: you have to relax and let your eyes diverge so that you see double. When each eye sees a pair of images, try to make the right image from your left eye overlap the left image from your right eye. When you have it, you'll see three images in a row. Concentrate on the one in the middle.

----

Hold your hand up with your fingers in a two finger peace sign "V-shape".

Look at the peace sign. See how the stuff on the other side of the room doubles up?

Now look at the stuff across the room. See how the peace sign doubles up?

While looking at the stuff across the room, try to shift your awareness to your fingers while keeping them in double vision. The "V" of your fingers will be a "W"

That's the essential skill you have to have while looking at the image pairs.

I was gonna explain but I saw you posted and I couldn't explain it better, francis.

you can also try with your computer keyboard.
get close to it and focus long-distance. Then try to bring two different (adjacent) keys into convergence as one. Apart from the letter on the key being a combination of two letters, the keyboard also feels like it's a bigger scale. Presumably something to do with the way what-your-eyes-are-doing is being used by the brain to understand the visuals it's getting from the eyes - 'if my eyes are this diverged, the thing must be x centimetres away, yet if it is this large in relation to my field of view its absolute size must be A', thusly one perceives the keyboard to be of greater scale, even though it takes up the same amount of your field of vision. I discovered this in a particularly boring IT lesson, when I fell asleep in front of a computer, and woke up staring at an enormous keyboard.
