Hey Max your latest is really great. The lower arm could use the same higher value applied to the deltoid region to show more form.

max, vyle, rasseltassel > really nice stuff on the last pages back
matthew > too bad to hear about your troubles. Do you feel your current education has been worth it? Obviously your art has improved, but was that because of good teachers/education or because of your hard work?
I'm trying to learn my way around painter and "improve" my brushwork (from 0) at the same time by not drawing a single line while doing so. I had this idea it would force me to concentrate more on the painting.. but it felt a little like trying to build a wood house without nails, so I'm beginning to wonder if it could be that this particular approach to it sucks.

From a little while ago; working with facial detail. Not speedish, but still incomplete enough to post.

jo: I tried that approach when I first came here a couple years back.
I was trying to emulate that "painterly" look I saw, totally abandoning what I "knew" about drawing. Alot of pieces suffered becuz of that...ALOT.
Then, I took a few figure painting classes, and tried that same approach becuz my teachers were telling me to.
More suffering.
Then, I said...you know what...fuck them. Then, I started drawing what I knew and then painting.
Slowly, sometimes, I'd see the color and value right away and just knock it down. Othertimes...still gotta use the drawing.
My suggestion is: if linear drawing is a strong tool of yours...use it. And, with time...you won't have to pull it out so much to build your houses. |

Ahahaha, I've never ever seen Hong Xiu Quan's name mentioned in a forum thread before. I wonder why you thought of him.
I rarely ever do speedies. I more or less just keep on starting new paintings, sketching stuff out, blocking in the initial color design, and then abandon it or move on to the next idea. I end up with a huge pile of unfinished WIP's--I guess they are a little bit like speedies. You can help me choose which ones to finish here: http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=39240 |

Lunatique: hahaha, I thought you'd know him. I am writing a huge paper on him right now. And since your in China, I thought you would get a kick out of it. I'll check your thread now.
FridayEve: Really nice hands... sn't that an old one? I've seen that before. Is that from a shot in Elizabeth? looks a lot like it.
Trying to simplify... not going too well. maybe I'll never improve.

Thought I'd share one of my beginner efforts. No tablet yet
I set the timer on 10 minutes every morning and try to paint two or more speedies of the first subject that pops into the head. I do these to get some mileage, pick up speed and learn from each one. Hopefully technique, more interesting ideas and composition will come soon. The main reason I post this is to make your work look so much better last pages been really amazing. You all rock.

inspired by matthew
watmough: um, i dont know, but surely something to think about. i think one thing i struggle with is that i had too much pure line drawing in the beginning, i'm not much of a painter i guess...
jo: those strokes/shapes are great!
spooge: yes, it's probably "just" that. ![Confused](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) |

Awesome Retro and Max, and thanks for the tip spooge. It's quite hard to put words in practice, but here's a try.
From the firsht Conan movie.
//edit: Hmm. perhaps I didn't put enough information in the focus point, and perhaps there is already too much information everywhere else.

Thanks a lot Max! Your last piece rocks! And Craig Mullins is the artist one should pick for reference for such, yes.
Thanks Annishamad! I forgot, but a couple of weeks ago a saw your web site: Neat. And I really like the illustrations you have there. Nice and atmospheric landscapes that look realistic, but still has an edge to them.
I think your knight is a definitive step in the right direction Octavian, I really like it.
And forgot about pg 603: Balistic I like that, those cartoony mountains are still convincing and the atmosphere is nice.
I love Matthews' church interior.
And Summer Pudding: Nice spaceship, the perspective is really well done as well.
pg 604
I like FridayEve's piece, nice colour values and dynamic!
Nice architecture Falldamage, I like that image.
Nice one Petri.J. I like that face..
I would also like to thank you Spooge Demon for that small tut you gave Octavian, I actually absorbed every word and tried to apply it to this last piece. Craig Mullins, you're doing us great honour by actually bothering to help us out here And I think Octavian has the right attitude, actually banging them right doors to get information. Mr. Mullins, I'm a big fan of your work and whenever I need to expose my brain to quality artwork I pop by http://www.goodbrush.com Your last two pieces here on this tread are simply gorgeous. I admire your work; you are definitely one of this eras greatest artists. (I just had to get it out because it is the truth, not trying to lick any ones a** here though)
Best regards to you Craig Mullins,
Bjornar Johansen
I called these hoversharks for the lack of any more imaginative name...

Nice stuff everyone.
With all this War of the Worlds hoopla, I got inspired. Sorry about the extreme lack of colour.

Thanks Idiran and Bjornar, and I agree with bjornar what he said about spooge, I haven't just had the courage to say it out loud.
I'm sorry that I wont post any image, but I just had to reply to P-Rik's painting.
I adore your your style, that's exactly the style I'm looking for, that's just so incredebly beautiful painting. I just HAD to say it. That's all. I'll just go now. ![Embarassed](images/smiles/icon_redface.gif) |

idiran, nothing fancy but here's a quick overpaint.
thanks again everyone for comments above and on the previous page.
jo, dang I wrote a long answer earlier but it disappeared and the computer hanged up when I posted, oh well.
It was very much worth it and without this experience I would have never become aware of how the art world works. I think it depends on what you are looking for though considering the learning approach, creativity I have learned and the power of experimenting but the modern schools will not teach realism and anatomy.
oh maan I gotta hit the bed
keep up folks |
