And oh yea swedish schools would'nt nurture your mind nearly as good as schools abroad, anywhere. If you really wanna hit the top, go to Russian schools (they're basically our neighbours!), they've got solid, solid art edu's.
Matthew: I think those rejections bid you well, thickens your skin a tad. I dont know What ( ! )swedish schools could teach you, ILLUSTRATION wise...maybe you should take the negligations as a sign, get your ass beyond swedish borders and aim for something better.
Your doing well so far, try to enhance what you already have with something worthwhile, something that'll boost your knowledge to whatever peak you're aiming for.
Aight you get the point.

hey robert! fancy finding you here  to be absolutely sincere with you, the stuff you find here and other digital forums is far more exciting than the work in traditional painting ones. these guys not only compose with crazy perspective, they light it, and draw it well... blows me away... creativity and imagination emanate from these forums and as i said, it's like fuel for me. i was actually a cartooning major but decided to be a tight ass gallery painter after falling in love with painting... that doesn;t take away the ability to be awed by some fo the people posting here... so refreshing!
i never did get uyour e-mail... thought your sabbatical included answering e-mails don't worry about it though... i haven't bought any lenses yet, but every day i'm more and more excited about photography...
oh and retro, yeah, the paintings actually look like that... the res is also pretty low, but i'd rather have quick loading paintings that get your stomach excited, than tons of clicking and waiting... i did use to paint with lively colors though... but i'm into something else now... this is an old one...(not quite a speed painting  )

Spooge, can you give me any suggestions on simplifying my values or any critique that you might think of? For instance your last work was stunning in the simplicity of value placement. I am trying to simplify, but I end up overworking things I think. I love how you have bold brush strokes that clearly define your forms.. creating an illusion of reality... I realize you've been doing it a long time and it takes time but maybe you could point something out I may not be doing in my work... I've been looking a lot at Velasquez and he had the same effectiveness of defining his form with minimal work.... its amazing but I can't seem to figure out how to do it properly.
Mayan warrior/painter struggle. This looks cartoony and it was unintentional 
and lastly it must be said that this is slightly after Spooges "paintman".

Absolutely. A lot of the traditional guys are missing out big time by looking down at the digital/fantasy/sci-fi/illustration/3D guys with their noses up in the air. I'm almost 100% sure that the average person in the latter group has a lot more fun being an artist than the former group.
A lot of the artists that work in entertainment (concept design, matte, illustration, games..etc) also do fine art in their freetime--they get the best of both worlds. But the fine art guys would never touch the stuff we do with a 10-foot stick. Whatever.

Nicol�s Uribe: I went to your website and I really enjoyed it. Great stuff. I once planned on becoming a concept artist but I think now I will paint with oils and make a career somewhat like Lipking. haha yes I will be that good.
FridayEve: I really love that picture you posted. The lines are great and provide much movement.

I appreciate your reply SamOs! I've heard both good things and some really bad things about the school ; )... but as long im aware of em' i can take control of my own education..illustration/fine art definitely.. but to be honest, im not looking for a degree.. as im feeling now, i simply want to use the school as a stepping stone to get abroad and out of this country. Hehe dunno about the russian schools =) sounds too strict, i believe in balance... and hey, maybe ill see you there this fall!
\o matthew ...nah dont feel brainwashed.. i think both you,, and myself have learned alot from these experiences in swedish art schools.. i still feel there's alot to learn in these schools.. and the 'higher' ones especially. Its one extreme against another one though 'fine art - illustration'.. its too bad illustraion is seen as being so dirty in the fine art-world, and vice versa. The damn whores dont let ya do both!(but in a way its all the same)  I've heard of ppl going to these schools.. and then later years after their graduation felt lost, realizing that they didnt really wanted to do the things they've been doing the years in school and after. I admire the person who takes this real honest look at him/herself and takes action against it and change.
Hmm.. dunno about the ateliers.. but If you have a strong mind you can make things right' no mather of your situation. About studying in another country.. yeah its expensive >_< but you're investing in yourself.. maybe russian school? =)sounds cheaper atleast.

Octavian, It�s pretty complex making things simple But if I had to simplfy that, I would say that there is too much information/contrast in the shadows. Decide what is in light and what is in shadow and don�t mix them up. Think like a comic artist. Two values, but if they are well thought out and designed and drawn they can look totally real. Think like that, but instead of making the light white and the shadow black, make the light a 7 and the shadow a 3. Then go ahead and use 5-10 in the light and 1-3 in the shadow to pull out sub forms. DO NOT use 1-5 in any part of the light, or use 5-10 in any areas of the dark. Keep you edges a little softer in the shadows, a little sharper in the light, you are done. (0 is black, 10 is white) Deciding what is in shadow and light for a particular object is pretty hard in words. I will leave that up to you and that is 99 percent of the struggle.

Retro, that sounds high enough to me. Just do it more?

retro,i dont know if its the same for you as it is for me...but with traditional media,i like to "let" things happen sometimes...it seems more difficult to do with digital media..
 did this in the dark ...while we were moving...very difficult.. |

I was lucky I guess with my art degree, went to a University in Leeds, UK. We were encouraged to do comics;
actually a group of us went to France twice on school trips for the annual Angoulemme (The comics capitol in France)
comics expo. I was driving a minibus from Leeds, with 8 other crazy students and a teacher, all the way down to southwest France
We saw Moebius signing books, Bilal was there and
Will Eisner. And we were able to exhibit our work as well.
We also went to the studio of a guy called Duncan Fegredo http://www.fegredo.com
in Leicester, England, He is a great artist doing work for DC Vertigo at that time. (Don't know what he is doing right now though.)
That was back in '97-98. I recommend Leeds Metropolitan University in England; the tutors were professional illustrators
that gave us lectures and crit. As well as great artistic freedom.
I miss that! The Fine Art department was cool as well,
but different from Graphic Arts which I undertook.
Here's another quick piece, still working on it, so this is a portion of it:

I'm really trying to improve this summer since I'm not working and it's a long good vacation
plus I got a german shepherd pup to run and play outside with to give balance to growing roots in front of my monitor
