yeez guys the art world is fucked up.

We had an art exhibition that started a week ago and one of those chosen for a scholarship was a girl who during a previous project just was sitting around and doing nothing, but still they gave her that scholarship with the statement that she had been working so hard and accomplished a lot with her latest works, wtf? I guess she was complaining a lot and that seems to be a keyword within the art industry, complain or brag all that u can and everyone will think you are the real deal.
And then we have those who think they are all that, they are during the exhibit talking about how good the result became with their latest painting and everyone is taking their word for it. -"oh yea this guy must be really good and he knows what he is talking about".

The higher education is starting to become crap aswell, I did attempt for that royal academy and some other schools but nowadays there seems to be a system based on how many times you apply, where quality won't matter. I actually thought I had the chance to get granted for at least one of the schools but as I mentioned previously it doesn't matter, unless you haven't applied many times before u are screwed. And I wouldn't be surprised either that if you are too good they will not grant you, cause u know, then u are not modern good enough.

U know guys when I started this art thing and joined here in sijun I had a totally different and naive view about art in general. I thought that the old methods and ways of painting still was approved and that when u reached that level of old mastery u would be considered good as an artist, now I know that it is a lot of elements which makes for a good artist. Anyway. during the years and during my two years in the art-school I think I actually learned a few things about creativity. But creativity won't take you that far and most of the time it isn't about the art that takes the artist somewhere, it is the all-around stuff that seems to matter more. The bragging or the complaining of the mister know it all people who knows everyone, it is a closed group of people and so it will continue to be I believe.

Oh maan I am whining away here but it felt good to write something about this and damn some things are bugging me for sure.
Not sure illustration would be the deal for me, maybe an Atelier or decorative painting cause I am all about texture and anatomy nowadays.

it's very easy to get discouraged... god knows there's enough galleries that show complete garbage, but once in a while, you get to see something that knocks your socks off... work that just blows you away and most importantly keeps you going... then and there you see a little light at the end of the tunnel and you realize, "well the majority of the art world is f'ed up, but this one experience makes it all worth it."

in my case, you guys provided that for me... the work that you're doing is beyond my defintion of cool... i don't even understand how the hell you do it... i'm just a regular painter, who has been fortunate enough to make a good living doing solely that... painting. and not just painting, but doing it somewhat traditionally which seems almost like a curse... but hey! i'm 27, married, painting every single day... all in all very very happy.

deciding that art is going to be your life is not an easy decision... but if it works out, if you work like hell, it's all worth it...suddenly you find yourself with dirty brushes in one hand, looking at forums like this and feeling like a friggin' caveman.... but a motivated, inspired and willing to do some kick ass paintings caveman. that's the beauty of art...

Simply amazing SUmmer Pudding. I am awed by your talent... some day I'll get there. If you added the ground crew, of course it would really activate this peice... but without them... it has the fealing of an abandoned set in hollywood.

Mathew, Don't worry about it man. I know the feeling. I go to the most pretentious school on the planet and I'm seriously about to drop out. its disgusting. For me, I wish I would have gone to SF acadamy of art instead or la art center. I don't know. I sort of cheated myself by buying into the idea that going to a "fine art" school would give me an edge or something.. but instead they put me down for being and illustrator (or at least trying to be) and tell me that its "not art".... Very frustrating indeed. and to see the loud mouthed artists who do little more than splash paint on a canvas now and again get scholarships and recognition makes me realize how lost the "fine art" world really is. I honestly believe that the entertainment artists are the future. I see the most amazing and talented artists right here on this thread....

It is said that "the fool never prevails over virtue" and that "a fool rises by means of others."

I scoff at the "fine art" world.

retro, to me it looks like you have better control with traditional.. you know how this stuff works, stroke that is few millimeters off can mean the difference between functional and nonfunctional, beautiful and hideous. I personally have much better line control with pencil than Wacom. Just my two cents.

Nicholas, welcome, nice work you do. It was a sketch, so the ho would have gone away. I would be fun to get a 10 ft canvas roll and do something like that for real, it might take 6 months. Ugh. Glad the Salon isn�t between me and lunch anymore.

Matthew, it can only bother you if you want their attention and approval. You will never get it, so don�t bother. The world is full of people who see things differently; you just have to find the micro-climate that has values similar to yours. Like here! It is tough when you need their approval to continue or for scholarship (I tried to get a scholarship at school. It was pretty easy, over half of the people who applied got full or partial scholarships. I got a rock.) but just get through it and don�t let it affect your motivation or work. Would you paint if you were the only person on earth and nobody would ever see what you do? Good! Continue�

I applied for those schools both this year and last year.. 11 applications in total.. 11rejections =)... man swedish schools.. always screwing with your head... but to be honest.. i kinda like it.. because i know things that end up being soo damn "right" in the end have to go through a phase of being sooo "wrong" at first ... i dont consider what i do to be Art though... yet.

Awell.. dont get down on your knees just yet.. (you know they want you too).. stand proud and keep doing what your doing.. however.. its always a good idea to question yourself and your work once in a while.. keep it real.

raah... im fucking swedish school.. Im going to AAU in san francisco this fall instead... u should look up some art schools in other countries.. the situation is not like this in every country.. with swedish education being free etc. its damn hard getting into these schools without whoring.

RasselTassel, I feel with you me painting brother and I much appreciate your words, yea they do screw with your head and I have been feeling brainwashed somehow lately. Do I really wanna paint like that? And then again Illustration is to conservative, I wish there would be a middle ground somewhere.
Maybe one of those ateliers would be something, at least if you keep in mind what you are doing, but maybe brainwashing appears there too.

Let me know how the AAU turns out, I have also been thinking about study abroad but damn it is expensive and that is what has been holding me back concerning that, me so poor.

matthew : just get rid of the " naive " side. You're working hard. Commitment to your craft and where you want to go with it is all good, but you'll have to deal with the money/promotion/image no matter what, if you want to make this your job. Anyway, find your balance between your own motivation and the biz side.
