What do you guys think of the Torque (tribes 2) engine compared to Quake 3 or Unreal?

Hmm.. i kinda qualify for this because im looking for a game job soon ;D

Just the obvious. It's worse, it's cheap. Hundreds of people buy it to make their own game. 80% are lame, others are good games. Thats it.

In fact me and some other dudes were gonna buy it long time ago to make our game. I dont know where those dudes are now!

It's a nice alternative to established engines considering that Unreal/Quake tech cost over 250k not including royalties and that's if they decide they're willing to license to an unproven developer.

Asking an artist what they think of a 3D engine though is like asking a programmer what they think about a painting. You need to ask an engineer to get a better assesment.

Have you downloaded Realm Wars off the Garage Games site? That'll give you a look at the engine and roughly what it does. It's continually being expanded upon (good community base) and it is only US$100. At the moment you will need some programming expertise behind yourself or your team to get precisely what you want, but there are always the forums there for help aswell.

Tribes 2 is different from Q3 and Unreal, and hence it'll have different stock standard features. But a good programmer can pretty much add in whatever. If you're making a full game, heading for a published copy on a store shelf and looking to do it without spending oodles of dosh on an engine, go Torque. Same scenario with good programmer, go Torque. If you're just making a small game and don't wanna spend anything, make a mod or UT or Q3.

Or get Torque anyway and test it out. 100 bucks ain't much, especially if you divide it between a team (which is what my group did)

realm wars was amusing for about........a half an hour

torque engine = Outdoor environment king...you want outdoors, this is the engine for you....allthough I believe the architecture is just models placed onto the terrain, it still works though.

q3 engine = Kick ass architecture...crappy terrain compaired to torque...pre-compiled lightmaps..

Unreal Engine = Like q3 engine....real time lighting....maybe better at terrain....

I'm no game designer though....

to me it always seemed like quake 3 had a bit more believable physics than unreal. it just felt a bit more fluid.
