Anyone get this to work? I have a NVidia GeForce 5200 card w 128 megs - trying to drive a new 23" Cinema display, but can't seem to get it up and running.

If I plug in my old crt, the computer sees both monitors but the cinema stays dark.

in case you havent tried...

I assume you use crt on one port and lcd on the DVI port? You're going to have to go to display properties/settings and enable it from there.

The apple cinema displays require something called 'Dual Link DVI'. Check if your video card supports it first. If not you'll have to get a new video card.

Drunken Monkey - I can enable two monitors (although i really did that just so i could see what was going on, since the Apple monitor just showed black). The NVidia software even "sees" the Apple Cinema HD Display, and labels it that way. I rebooted and forced it into VGA mode (you know the old F8 trick), which works fine. But then it doesn't like it when I switch resolution settings from there - turns black.

Skullmonkeys, I think only the 30 inchers require the dual link DVI. I am trying to hook up the 23" which is supposed to be compatible with PCs running video cards with DVI-I out.

Bob - no, I paid a pretty penny for it and am getting a little frustrated. Almost ALMOST makes me want to switch to Macs, hehe.

yea francis, i have one..... it was a nightmare to get it working...

im not exactly positive as to what got it working finally but i think it was the monitor drivers, basically i downloaded this program called powerstrip, theres a monitor information thing that shows all these settings and numbers about your monitor, and there's a option to read the monitor data from stored EDID, and it should show you its an apple , cinema hd display with 2.20 gamma etc,

then you can write a custom monitor driver, so you just save what its already reading out (if its reading your apple monitor) and load those new drivers in the hardware profiles thing..., then reboot... without the crt monitor.. you'll prolly just get a black screen untill windows loads up. that's what mine does anyway.

i think it took me an entire weekend to get it to finally work, i was so pissed and worried id never get it working.

but i love it now.

Stephen, I tried your program. I had already found a monitor driver written specifically for the 23" Cinema Display, with information taken from the EDID. I tried the Powerstrip option anyway just in case, but it was still no go. I suppose the video card I have just won't hack it. In any event, it's going back to the store. I don't have the time or patience to f*** with it anymore. I don't expect Windows + Apple to be plug n play by any means but this is ridiculous.

Bob - I was trying to run its native res and refresh, 1920x1200 and 60 Hz.

having one apple 23' display in a dual set up sounds like a very good idea.
i have been using just the apple display with my pc and the color(value) is usually off. the image i did in with the apple monitor always looks a little hazy on a normal crt.

too bad that i cant afford another monitor at this moment. anyone knows if there is any color calibrating program of this monitor for pc?
it might sounds so silly but it would be great if i get the apple's color closer to crt.

PC's usually have a gamma of 2.2 set

Color Spyder is 1 way of calibrating ur monitor Smile

i use colorific from years back and its good enough for print Smile

Weird.
I have a 20" cinema display hooked up to my pc, and it's working wonderfully. I have a Radeon 9800PRO.

Find a mate with a newer/more powerful gfx card and try to hook it up there. It worked right out of the box for me and it runs 1650x1080 i think.

i may be wrong but dont the bigger apple displays require one of the higher end vid cards, IE. 6800GTs and or Radeon Xls .

the new Matrox, 3Dlabs, Quadro and FireGL cards support them Smile

Hey guys

Thanks for the help and suggestions. You know what, I finally got it to work. The thing I had to do was just upgrade video cards as Sukhoi mentioned. I put in a Radeon 9800 Pro and it was indeed plug and play. I wish I had just done that to start with instead of going through all that pain. Now I'm hoping my power supply is OK...

Popeye, yeah the CRTs are usually a little better for color, which is why I stayed with CRTs for this long. I think with a little calibration the color on the cinemas can get pretty close.
