I am an exiting Freshman studying Graphic Design at Drexel University, PA. I'm looking to get some sort of job this Summer so that I don't sit on my lazy ass the whole time. Personally, I'm interested in getting a job where I can apply myself, instead of something lame like working at a supermarket or retail store. I feel like since I'm in college now, I shouldn't have to deal with those sorts of "high school jobs." A professor of mine recommends that we do not seek a graphic design job, since we don't know enough yet. I agree with that idea, but I'd still love to have something remotely related to graphic design or art in general. I'd settle for fetching coffee for graphic designers! So I ask, should I look around for a temp job or internship of some sort at a graphic design place, or should I just taken whatever I can get and save whatever money I can earn? Does anyone live in the Philadelphia or West Chester area (those are the two places I can access, since I do not drive and would like to stay with family over the summer) and know of a decent place to look? I know there are tons of establishments in Philly but it's overwhelming and I hardly know how to start looking for a place that would accept me. Any advice is much appreciated.
(This'll be so much easier after I finally have my co-op!) _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |

im sort of in the same boat, although im a fine arts major... im actually taking a year off and just finished my soph year.
my plan is to reserve a gallery space, and just see what comes from that.. there's probably small gallreies nearby you, if you hav enough confidence in your work... ive realized selling work is a good first step in the art business, cuz im good, but i hav no idea what to do with my talent (may still go back to illustration, etc.)! hoping to build my confidence, really..

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss a supermarket/restaurant job as "something lame". You can learn a lot of overarching life lessons as a wage slave, lessons about how to actually WORK, lessons about the human condition, lessons about your own motivation as a person. I know I sound like the archetypal 50's dad droning on about how hard work builds character, but it's true.
Breaking your back for $6 an hour will make you a better person. _________________ QED, sort of. |

yeppers . . .
All through college I cut grass, dug up yards for irrigation, moved dirt, moved stone and brick, bussed tables, worked in a grocery store, delivered ice (yeah, 40 lb bags of cubed ice), and washed dishes.
I had to constantly remind myself that it was all temporary and part of the bigger scheme of things.
And it was.

I think you should try both, if you get a job related with your aspirations good, if you get a job that's just hard work, good too. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Hey thanks everyone!
I think I'm currently learning about having a crappy job. I took a position as a gallery monitor on my campus. While sitting and doing homework/reading and getting paid for it sounded like a sweet deal...it gets incredibly boring. Shoulda seen it coming, eh?
Right now I'm looking at either getting a non-paid graphic design internship, or getting a small job at my father's workplace. I would prep the shop...like cutting wires and stuff like that. That'd be pretty good because I woulnd't have to take public transportation!
I think I'm learning about labor from my 3D design class- I can't wait 'till that's over.
I'm not confident enough in my work, nor do I have enough of it for any gallery stuff- but that sounds awesome- good luck matter!
Thanks again guys- hopefully I'll land something decent- must make enough to afford Photoshop and Illustrator for next year! _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |
