Hi!
This painting is created with Photoshop cs, Painter 9 and made from a photo.
I painted with several layers and many brushes.
I hope somebody likes oilpaintings imitation on canvas style.
Comment and Critics are high appreciated.
Thank you!

Pretty cool effect and it does look rather convincing. I think its high time you start workin from your own original images so you can take all the credit for them. _________________ http://www.angelfire.com/art2/wfkeil |

i'm betting on eyecandy resurface filter, smudge, resurface again, unsharp mask
i'd much prefer to see an original painting though, something you can actually take credit for, faking it only damages real painters credibility further in the digital world |

spyroteknik... My feelings as well, but it is pretty clear that the world of potential artists' materials and motivations has been changed by the technology... as have many other areas.
His works are quite pleasing to look at. Perhaps it is just the beginning of a journey. _________________ HonePie.com

I think the only thing that disturbs me more than this filter galore itself is the comments on that site that go like "OMG thats so AMAZING".
edit: In case you didnt just run the filter over the photos, but programmed it yourself, you have my respect. Coding good filters is probably an art in itself.

Change of technology in any areas changes also a sight at art. Why I cannot be the digital artist? _________________ Alexander Layevsky |

LOL, I don't think anyone minds that you are the digital artist. Just dont expect the artists here to flood you with praise for the fact that you can push some buttons.
But hey, at least you dont claim that you paint those yourself and never ever touched a filter. |

The actual paintings appear to be photo overpainting with brushes, not filtered photos. Not sure how the canvas effect is achieved.
It seems to me that his brush strokes are quite well done. He should try doing it from scratch. _________________ HonePie.com

But in fact use of one filter is not enough to receive the good image. Yes, I sometimes program, and also I apply to each image various filters, brushes, and software. Also, before application of the filter I painted a photo by hands (sorry, by mause in PAinter 9, don't by hand , only then I apply different filters and other software.
But I have not told, that I are real artist. In fact Itold - "I'm digital artist". These are different kinds and directions.

You know its not like I have anything against filters really. Also my mind is open for use of the digital medium in whatever ways. This whole issue is just so complex and hard to discuss.
With me its just that different kinds of things make me respect people differently. I mean your images are quite well done I have to admit, but I would respect you more if you made the photos yourself and like a thousand million times more if actually painted the source material.
But as I said, since you dont claim anything wrong, theres no reason for me to bash or disrespect you. I value honesty in a person still more than skill. |

You are right, I agree with you. My respect for you. I saw your works - they are magnificent! I do absolutely other art- but I do that I do. I like it to do, and I did some good projects for the serious companies. Any comments, like "OMG" or ' BAD " are necessary for me. I think, you understand me. _________________ Alexander Layevsky |

Interesting... maybe future street painters will have a laptop, a digicam and badass printer, making nice "oil paintings" in 20 minutes.
ah, maybe I can patent that idea and make loadz of MONNNNEYYYZZZZZ!!1!... eh. |

I can't really logically critique the technique: the result is what matters. But the result... The photographic source shows too much for my liking. I think it's something about the colours and shades, there's a sort of emptiness to them that doesn't look like it was made by a painter, but by a camera. The brushstrokes are stylized but the colours are not at all. |

I shall work to do colors and tone like real oilpaintings. _________________ Alexander Layevsky |

I agree with what affected said. Some people are sure to criticize you for taking a "cheap shortcut" instead of actually learning to paint on canvas. As for the results I think what you've done is rather interesting and appealing but you have the same problem that a lot of real painters have when starting. When using a found photo for reference from a magazine or stock art or such it is often all too apparent that the painting is just a painted version of a photo. There are things a photo do to an image such as simplifying color variations and contrasts and so on. Especially photos of models from fashion magazines and the like where they do some slick photo tricks like the super contrasty eye shadow and blown out skin, etc. I don't think its so much of an issue of "trying it to make it look more like an oil painting", but simply just observing the way colors and such work in real life as opposed to a photo.
right now I'd say you have a cool little magic trick but your work is lacking substance. I think doing these has given you some observation skills, you should go out and create your own images. _________________ http://www.angelfire.com/art2/wfkeil |
