WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spielberg has gotten some guff about not setting this one in the 1890's or the 40's, buit I personally feel that the most interesting aspect of this story is that it is timeless, the idea of alien invasion permanently ingrained in pop culture. Although, I wonder if they'll still take the "Mars is watching us" angle, or dream up aome new aliens. The glowing red orb had me wondering.

Close Encounters and this thing would make for a great double-feature.

Oh yeah, did anyone catch the new "Willy Wonka" trailer? Ummmm..... looks interesting, but that song has GOT to go. And Depp looks downright creepy. A link-

I don't have a problem with the setting being tweaked. Personally I enjoy invasion films; I don't know why exactly but I do.

"I've often wondered," the President told us once again, "what if all of us in the world discovered that we were threatened by an outer -- a power from outer space, from another planet." And then he emphasized his theme that this would erase all the differences, and that the "citizens of the world" would "come together to fight that particular threat..."

That would be great times indeed.

tom cruise?

please.

he's the will smith of the white.

all we now need is an armageddon follow-up where cruise singlehandedly combats a moon sized asteroid, beats it and saves the humanity. or just top gun re-runs on tv. rather the latter.

War of the Worlds sound cool. I never read the book though :/ Embarassed If I understood correctly, it was the book that inspired Orson Welles's infamous broadcast in 1938 ?

I found a mp3 of the 1938 broadcast 'bout a month ago on filesoup.com, it was 57 m 33s bittorrent (LEGAL downloads).

hehe, true I guess other than that there's little to the plot Razz I was imagining it in Starship Trooper's fashion, a sci-fi gorefest, a little cheeky as well. The original Doom episodes were more like that. Doom 3 was boring 'cliche'. But yeah unfortunately if it ever happens it will end up like doom nr. 3 probably..

*bump*

Did anyone happen to see the Superbowl TV spot for War of the Worlds. It appears that Dreamworks is spoon feeding us more visuals. This stuff really looks good, and I have to admit I am looking very forward to this film:

I'm torn up on the subject. On one hand, I love Spielberg. He makes the kind of humanist movies that re-affirm my faith in American cinema.

On the other hand, Tom Cruise.

That trailer during the Super Bowl was pretty terrifying, though. Seeing that highway collapse.. boy. I'll see the movie just for that.

Yeah - I don't think Tom Cruise is all that bad. Although it wasn't a stellar film, I thought Minority Report was pretty good. As for WOTW, I'm just anticipating a new interpretation of the story with some good ol' eye candy.

Bring it on.

Well, knowing that Tom Cruise is a Scientologist maybe this movie will coincide with the second coming of Xenu.

When extraterrestrials are involved, there are never any coincidences...

From ScifiWire at Scifi.com
02:58 AM, 11-FEBRUARY-05

Quote:
Worlds Secrets Revealed

Filmmakers, including director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Cruise, revealed key details to SCI FI Wire about their upcoming SF epic movie War of the Worlds during filming on location in the Los Angeles suburb of Piru, Calif., on Feb. 10. Among the secrets revealed about the film, which is based on H.G. Wells' classic martian-invasion novel:

The aliens are not martians.

The aliens will appear in the massive mechanical tripods described in Wells' book, and not the boomerang-shaped flying saucers from George Pal's 1953 movie of the same name. The tripods will be largely computer-generated.

Tom Cruise's character, Ray, is a dockworker and father, not a scientist or military leader, as in previous incarnations of Wells' story.

Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, stars of Pal's movie, will have cameo appearances.

Spielberg's film will hew closely to themes and events in Wells' novel, featuring such elements as the red weed and the black smoke, as well as a cellar sequence right out of the book.

SCI FI Wire was part of a group of outlets given an unprecedented glimpse at a Spielberg film in production. The tiny town of Piru, nestled in the green hills north of Los Angeles, was transformed into a rainy Hudson Valley, N.Y., town for three days, populated by 700 extras playing refugees fleeing the alien menace. Cruise, with Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin playing his children, attempts to drive a blue Plymouth vanthe same vehicle they are seen commandeering in their Super Bowl TV spot and one of the few remaining operating carsthrough a crowd of refugees, who begin to bang on the car and yell, threatening to pull the family out.

Speaking to reporters during a break in filming, Spielberg said that the movie holds special resonance in these unsettled times. "I gave the benevolent aliens a couple of shots [in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.]," Spielberg said. "And now I'm going to try my hand at the worst kind [laughs]: ... the kind that's just bent on ending civilization as we know it and beginning their own. If you read the original book, you know they terraform the planet. They reap and sow. ... And I think in the shadow of 9/11, there is a little relevance with how we are all so unsettled in our feelings about ... our collective futures. And that's why I think, when I reconsidered War of the Worlds, post-9/11, it began to make more sense to me, that it could be ... a tremendous emotional story, as well as a very entertaining one, and have some kind of current relevance."

For his part, Cruise said that he was eager to work with Spielberg after their first experience on Minority Report. "For me, The War of the Worlds was always a book that I really enjoyed," he said. "And I felt that the story could be relevant. ... All the elements are exciting. you know? [And,] obviously, [the chance] to work with my friend again. ... I'm playing a father, ... things that are very important to me in my life. It's the biggest, smallest movie that we've made." War of the Worlds is currently in production and will open June 29.
