There are times when I'm about to throw Painter out of the window. But usually about 20 minutes later, one of the Painter pros posts in the Speedpaint thread and I change my mind about it.
The original ref for this is from a girly magazine called "Glamour", and no, it's not mine... But there's some great articles on mascara and peach foundation... errhhhrumm... anyway.
About 5 hrs in Painter. Level adjustment in Photoshop.

It's strange, but somehow my eyes keep showing it to me as a head and a body. I can't seem to view it as a whole image. I think it's something about the way the head is framed by the hair that separates it from the rest. You have good light there and I like how you rendered the hair. |

I think it's just a matter of a different degree of finish between head and body. It's a great stylized piece though, I like this a lot! Can you do several more like this?? _________________ Francis Tsai

Affected, very well observed!
but i disagree with Francis ... her shirt and the face/hair seems to be equal in degree of detail(the face a bit more, but that doesn't matter) ... i think the problem is that her neck is very rough painted so the neck is splitting the picture into two detailed parts. And the viewer isnt guided well through the picture but his look is hopping between those two main spots.
Anyway i don't think this is too bad ... or where do you look if you would speak to this woman?
*lookin@face*
Francis: "hi, my name is Francis"
*lookin@boobs*
Women: "hi, my name is Lisa"
*lookin@face*
Francis: "what? sorry, was just lost in thoughts"
*lookin@boobs*
Lisa: "i said my name was Lisa - well, my name is still Lisa"
*still lookin@boobs"
Francis: "Yes, yes"
*lookin@face*
Francis: "Yes?!"
Lisa: "Allright?"
*face, boobs, face, boobs, face*
Francis: "Yes!" _________________ Lars Gtze

Looks pretty damn good. Very elegant rendering. Agree with the whole face doesnt belong to the body thing. I think its because there isnt a sublte transition of the neck to the underchin... but i dont know shit.
And yes, dura has it right, it is a shame that tits don't have eyes. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

that gave me a funny picture in my head,,,
Nice painting! To me, her left shoulder + neck is a bit dark.. or her hair too bright |

OK I guess I should be a little more specific. The shirt *is* rendered fairly tightly like the face and hair. The body obviously is still WIP, and there is not the same degree of modelling of planes and color/skin tone variation on the torso and arm as in the face. To me, it reads as if you are still working on rendering the body (not just the boobs) and the head and shirt are done.
However. It could be done as is. I still think the face and hair stylization are great. _________________ Francis Tsai

Thanks for the comments guys! Sorry for the long reply, but I've disconnected my new TFT and put the old CRT back while I work on this some more.
Francis: Hehe, thanks. I think I got caught between trying to finish something up tightly and yet still keep some of the brushstrokes in. I kinda left out the bottom section because I wanted to make it look a bit expressive. But now that I look at it again, it just looks messy.
Misc: Thanks. I think the ref photo is kinda blown out in the contrast stakes (kinda like how Nat. Geog. blow out the levels of their photos to make them look sharper). I should really paint more from life as the subtlety of the shadow areas would be easier to recognise.
Drunken Monkey: Yep, I've spent too long on the face, but not transferred the same level of rendering elsewhere. Cheers. I seem to recall some UK tv program where they used to get people to send in photos of tits that look like scary eyes.
The Insane Lemur: Just make sure you start out with an exfoliating scrub, followed by intense non-perfumed moisturiser, from there you can work your foundation into a paste and... oh... I see, hehe.
Duracel: Yep, I could do more to unify the picture, I think.
annisahmad: The eyes, the eyes, look into my eyes, not around the eyes, not around the eyes, the eyes, the eyes...
Affected: Cheers. I probably need to look at it more as a whole picture and stop concentrating on isolated areas. Possibly less intense rendering in some areas.
I actually saved this picture incrementally, so I might put together a small walkthrough. I'll post it on the website when it's finished. Not a tut as such, but just run through the picture as it was put together. Thanks everyone. |

I think the best part of this is the garment. It looks really cleanly done, and gives a nice soft feel. The face is good too, but the cosmetics do seem a bit overdone...I guess with reference from Glamour you can't expect much else,
the hair...it looks really complex...you did a good job of capturing the form and bounce...but some of the really hard edged highlights look too basic. They don't blend well. I am not sure if that is what you were going for or if it is just that this is unfinished.
Overall, looks quite promising.
By the way, I like your speed paints over at concept art.. just found this site, looking forward to seeing more of your work. |
