Wow - after a long period of concentrating on fairly boring illustration and graphic design
I discovered to my horror that I'd lost the knack of doing real painting in Photoshop.
This was done as a loose exercise (from ref) to try to get my hand back in gear.
Not fantastic, but it's a start. _________________ Rowan Dodds

Thanks guys - it felt great to get my hand in on this sort of work again. I should do some more if I get the time. _________________ Rowan Dodds

Hmm, I've painted in some shoulders to get rid of the floating-head look. I dunno, do you think this version is better than the original?

No, in the top one, she could be doing
anything, with or without the blouse.
It's all about that look, not her shoulders. |

The shoulders infinitely improve this. Also, don't over-work this piece, it looks very nice as it is ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Great facial expression. I can honestly say I don't know if I have ever painted a tongue. But that one i well done!
You do a lot with those large paint strokes. I agree with the previous poster who encouraged not to overdo this one. By the way, what brush settings do you use? I have a bad habit of working with overly soft brushes, and am looking for tips!
Ah, and yes, the shoulders help a lot. |

hi - thanks for your kind comments.
As for brush settings, with this picture I used a hard edge brush and had either opacity or size varied by wacom pressure to get the sensitivity I was after. I tried to stay away from any soft-edged brushes as much as possible to keep some character to the brushstrokes and avoid the Photoshop airbrushed look.
As a last step, to smooth some of the more jarring transitions and give the hair a tad more texture, I took the image into Painter and used some of the smudgy oil brushes to make some very minor adjustments (the changes are subtle, but they do improve it. You can see the differences by overlaying this and the last image in photoshop.)
As I said, I should really do a few more practice pieces like this when i get the chance but it can be hard to find the motivation. _________________ Rowan Dodds
