This is not much, but it is the first oil painting I've done in about 20 years. Painting a grapefruit and an orange from life was a good way to start getting back up to speed. Oil painting is not quite like riding a bike... it doesn't come back all at once, as can be seen below... not very good... pretty stiff and lifeless...
...and, I gotta say, I kept trying to hit a Ctrl Z, but it was nowhere to be found...
EDIT: BTW, I made a dark acrylic underpainting before starting in oils. When I stopped oil painting way back then, I had just started to use acrylics for underpainting. It speeds up the initial process of getting into a painting. Good or bad...? I'm going to keep doing it and see where it leads.

Interesting how similar your style looks, oil or digital, eyewoo.
And yes, keyboard shortcuts do get buried pretty deep in the spine... I remember when Tie Fighter was a big hit I played it "a bit". Then I once installed some application and noticed I hit ctrl-t to start time compression because it was taking too long... Then I figured maybe you CAN get too much of a good thing. |

Another oil... starting to feel the paint again, but still pretty lifeless...
The acrylic underpainting:
...and the oil painting:

funny... I think the acrylic version has a little more life to it than the oil version in the example eyewoo. There's a certain feeling you lost with the rendering with the oils... maybe _________________ http://kontinue.com/coldkodiak/ |

Agreed... I'm working on it... how to keep the life in a quick sketch which is inherently splashed with spontaneity and life... how to move the sketch to a finished picture. I think that is only possible after understanding how the medium works, i.e. more experience and the three Ps... practice, practice, etc... _________________ HonePie.com

I think the warm tones of the acrylic are more pleasing... |

I have a large dump, most from books and a few from life... But that's okay!

long time no post. not doing nudes at the mo, wish i could. drawing of kids are really quick sketches from old photos, but the spirit was the same as working from life. the third is your usual bored-in-train-drawing-sleepy-strangers. oh well.

Peter Santha: I like that second one ALOT.
This one was a challenge becuz I got to workshop late last Friday.
There was like a million muthafukkaz. So, I had to cram my ass inbetween two people, turn my easel the opposite direction and basically look over my shoulder backwards while I drew. That's why some of proportions are kinda off.
Either way...I felt like a kid, rendering again. Sorry for the bad photo.

Hey guys, I have a lot of life drawings I want to show but I don't know how to get them into the computer. Do you guys just have really large scanners or do you take digital photos of your works? |

Probably both ways... Look at the image in the reply directly above your post... definitely a photo and most probably a digital photo. _________________ HonePie.com

Odds, I use a scanner but often the drawings are too big and I have to scan in two parts then merge them together in Photoshop.
Xia, I really like that first oil painting. Your sketches are coming along. I'm glad to see that there are more marks and in different directions, moving around the figure. :) Shading with one stroke in the same direction all the time can sometimes flatten the form and work against what you are trying to achieve with light and mass. It's exciting to see your drawings get better and better.
Beat, that sleeping woman sketch is wonderful. I makes me want to draw more people when I'm out.
more drawings from short poses:
I really like the texture of the cardboard at the back of sketch pads. The face is bad... booo. The mouth is doing it's own thing in a different space and time. I attempted her face several times during the session without any luck. Ah well.

Popeye: Nice work.
P-Rik: Thanks, man. Good to see you using the pencil.
And drawing your GF too...that's a good way to keep 'em hangin' on.
Torstein: Where have YOU been??? I remember your experiments from a couple years back in the Speed thread! But, for real, thanks for noticing, man. Honestly, it means alot. That's really been my goal. Structure, form, value...the basics. I've had a lotta gaps in my art from being self taught. I'm real ruff innalotta places.
I remember Spooge suggesting if anybody wanted to know how to draw, take Kevin Chen or Vilppu. I went for the horse and took Vilppu and I swear this man has shown me my own brain. The way he breaks it down is so simple it's ridiculous! I refer to Kevin's notes as well(thank god for the internet). Ironically, he doesn't even use paper. If you're reading, Eyewoo, he's using a tablet PC and sketching with Sketchbook Pro.
So between that and going to sleep with Loomis everynight, hopefully one day, painting, drawing, and my imagination will all come together and have babies.
Today's workshop. Acrylic kicking my ass:
