I watched Ep 04 - A New Hope yesterday and am now in the middle of EP 01 and noticed that the sabers in the original episode were really shaped like swords ... on top view they looked sharp and narrow, but in ep 01 they are like rods or just glowing pipes :P
are the animators getting lazy or what :P
I'll check the other episodes aswell to see where the change happens ....

just a fact I thought I'd share

in defense of the animators, the sabers should look like 'glowing pipes'

The lightsabers were always meant to be like glowing rods.
In the first Star Wars movie they used reflective material around the rods, because CG wasn't existent back then. They pulled a high contrast matte off the lightsabers and made them glow optically - lotsa rotoscoping and hand painted effects animation involved - that's why they sometimes look kinda funny.

Nowadays they can really make perfect glowing rods

I've had this page in my favorites for a while now...good if you want to make your own wacky lightsaber movies and gives you an idea of how it's actually done...
