yeah... thats probably it. That, and the sleepy atmosphere that fills my head helps me to draw better.

as you mentioned I think it's the relaxed sleepy state. I can kind of go that and full light though if I get close to the paper

Lots of people feel more productive in the night/dark. I love the feeling of sitting in front of my computer in the middle of the night. It feels like I'm the only one awake in the entire world (even though that�s not true at all), and that I�m free to create what ever I want to.

I just realized i suck at drawing. That happens once a month. Anyways...
I draw so much better in the dark than in full light. (By dark i don't meen completely dark, just kind of halfly dark)Why is that?
By the way, do you great artists out there have any tips on how the working place should be?
Any tips on how to access my deepest artistic sense while drawing are also apreciated.

Another thing- Just after a telephone call, or a lecture in school, I get like a production kick, when I just sit and draw and don't think about anything, like I were on drugs or something. I wish I could get like that anytime I wanted- then I would be a great artist.
I also draw better in school than at home. I have found that I draw better when I listen to music, especially White Stripes.

I'm very much the same with the night thing. All day long i procrastinate...i guess the world around me feels too chaotic during the day to really settle down and just let my creative juices flow.

there's something about the dead of the night, when all is quiet and calm and the rest of the world seems to dissapear...I lose some of my inhibitions and get to work. Mind you, cos it's the middle of the night i'm usually too buggered to actually do anything and cos i'm so tired/stressed it all flops anyway! argh, there is no hope for me.

Btw, i'm new. Terribly intimidated (i can't believe the talent out there!)....and very, very shy about posting here! I've just been looking at the speed painting and I just don't know whether to be inspired or totally discouraged (I'm in my second year of studying Graphic Design and Illustraiton).

Not sure where would be most appropriate to ask this...but since i'm posting a reply here i'll do it where i am...

I've never done digital work before, but would love to learn. Would someone like to take a look at what i've done by hand (coloured pencil and illustration markers)...and just ...well....boost me ego a wee bit? In comparison to what's on here i'm absolute poo, but i wanna teach myself how to use the computer as a medium, and hopefully one day be good enough to post some work

Thanks for the offer for help, i'm sure as hell gonna need it. I'm very new to all of this, only really been using a computer to generate images for a year or so now.

scylla, buy the cheapest one. They are good and affordable. I have one myself, bought it for about 200 dollars. Helped me a lot. It sucks drawing with mouse. Also, if you haven't already, check out that awsome program painter 7.

Definetely get a Wacom - a Graphire if you're on a budget or a 6x8 Intuos if you've got the dough ...

I also draw better with a black biro pen than pencil no idea why...

Also i'm very new to Digital work scylla, infact i've had my Wacom Intous 6x8 tablet since June 3rd 2001 (my b/day, cost be �250!) and havent used it since, i find it too hard! No idea what sizes to draw on (when you create the new file and select the dimensions) and many other problems, i've posted one or two pictures on this forum and got no reply, and havent bothered since

I'm in Aus, anyone have any clue how much they are here?

I think uni has some graphic tablets hidden away somewhere (probably ancient and cruddy), might persuade one of the lecturers to let me dig it out, dust it off and give it a wirl (before i buy).

I've also been into the more "traditional" stuff, for some reason i get more 'wow!'s that way....besides, i'm biased. There's something about that first hand experience of work done without a computer.

But, I've been blown away by what i've seen on here, and i guess i should adapt to the times

And i need some advice...

I'm doing a self portrait for my illustration class, has to be three portraits each representing a side of my personality.

Because i don't have time to do three paintings, i was going to digitally render it.

I've just completed a component in digital rendering - basically using photo shop to scan in some line art, select sections and then airbrush them.

I have this tendancy to want everything to be smooth and the gradients perfect, yet everybody else seems to have this cool rought brush technique! Guess that's the wacom tablets and Painter????

So, if anyone knows of this technique i'm talking about, would you incourage or discourage me from using it?

On request i'll show you my first digital rendering done this way. It's pretty stupid, but in comparison to most of the other students work...well i thought it was the dog's bollucks

what you seem to want to be doing- this is Linda Bergkvist (Enayla) very smooth.

Very distinct styles and everyone has their own neither is inherently "better" than the other it just comes down to preference. No expert here but the idea behind Craig's way of painting is that when you understand color hue and value you can make a minimal amount of brush strokes but still be able to make a picture "come alive". Enayla's has much more to do with rendering out in detail to create a more realism based portrait.

I guess just try to find your own style and have fun with it and it will show.

The smoother style is definately more what i do, i just can't seem to help it!

And i *love* craig mullins work - i think what appeals to me most is the fact that i can't really do that stuff myself. So there's that sense of awe when i look at his work.

I'd still like to play around with that technique though, i think that the rough strokes give so much personality and emotion to a piece. I mean really, if you want it to look all smooth and life like, take a photo (unless its a seriously surreal piece).

And yup, i really have to find my own technique and way of doing things....i'm bloody hopeless at adapting someone else's technique anyway! I've always had my own way of doing things.

But as i'm just starting out I guess I'm looking for a bit of direction....I'll never really know though until i get cracking and actually do some work though!...hehe

it might be the cheapest wacom, but there are brands that are cheaper than wacom, and when it comes to quality and functionality they are nowhere near wacom(at least to my knowledge).
