For some time now I've been thinking about a particular branch of visual arts I'd really like to pursue, more than all the others. That is sculpting and modelling miniatures and masks for movies and games and such. Nothing seems to give me as much satisfactions as getting my hands dirty on a chump of clay and come out with a piece I can be proud of.
Enough of the subhuman perversities and to the real point of this post: I can't seem to find any art-school or such in Finland where I could study and practice sculting. Every school seems to be more focused on creating separate pieces of art from questionable materials rather than traditional clay and wax sculpting and casting. Is there any good place to study sculting and modeling in Finland or even in Europe?
If somebody knows anything about such art-schools or institutions I'm all ear.
Edit: I just noticed that this is wrong forum to post as there is nothing 'digital' in sculpting, but I can't delete this anyway, so mods you may delete this post or change it to Random Musings. Sorry for being such a n00b. . |

I'm studying production design for film and tv @ UIAH and the curriculum in principle could be twisted around to incorporate modelmaking etc. Ceramics and glass I'm not familiar enough with to say if it's what you want. But mostly I think if you're looking for just modelsculpting, then keep in mind that UIAH at least tends to aim at a broader skillset and doesn't necessarely focus on just one thing. That said, students do have the opportunity to focus on areas they're interested in.
Have you tried www.kuva.fi ? |

I've visited both places and asked some questions. TaiK doesn't seem to have anything I'd like to learn from sculpting, and I'd propably enter to the graphic sector were I to enter there at all. Academy of Fine Arts seemed a little more closer to what I'm looking for , but not exactly: the impression I got from the teachers on the sculpting section there is that students don't get much teaching on traditional methods. People just seemed to do their own artistic 'thingy' and aim for exhibitions rather than movies and stuff. It's not that I couldn't perhaps do something like mask sculpting there but just that it is unlikely that I could get any teaching on that subject.

The dvd's are kind of expensive, but I think they'd give you a great basis upon which to start working on your own portfolio. Be sure to check out the rest of the dvd's under the analog tab.
