I'm pretty new to this digital painting scene, and I'm finding Painter a bit frustrating. Does Painter always suffer from brush lag or does in run smoothly on the right machine? I only ask because I really love the work I'm seeing on this and other sites, so I want to keep at it. In my current project I'm trying to acheive a watercolor background wash without streaks. So far, I've been unsuccessful. It makes me wonder what are the actual advantages of painting digital. Rolling Eyes Okay, not really, I know the advantages, but we all know that frustrated place to which I'm referring. Wink

Any suggestion please? Confused

Thanks.

painter 8 is slow with higher resolutions and more demanding brushes...especially the watercolour brushes at larger sizes.
quite honestly,i would probably paint your background with traditional watercolours on arches paper and scan it in,ive done this many times, and is the quickest option for me.
you can even match the paper texture in painter without too much hassle.

Try the 'digital watercolour' brushes.

If you want a particular Painter 8 Water Color variant and Paper interaction, there's another thing you might try:

Paint your "wash" on a blank white Canvas with one of the simpler dry brush variants, for instance, a Pastels variant or a Tinting variant.

With Canvas active in the Layers list, choose Lift Canvas to Water Color Layer from the Layers palette menu.

Choose the Water Color variant you want and the Paper you want.

Choose Wet Entire Water Color Layer from the Layers palette menu.

Depending on the Water Color variant and Paper combination, the effect can be anything from subtle to extreme so I'd suggest doing some testing on a copy of your image.

Also, depending on the size of your image and the Water Color variant you choose, this process may take a short time or a long time, so be prepared to do something else while you wait.

TIP: During the wetting process, the Water Color Layer's water droplet icon will animate until it's finished. If your image is large, it may not begin right away. If other things are going on that demand system resources, the water droplet animation may hesitate, then begin again even several times during the process. Make sure it's stopped for a few minutes before attempting to do anything else in Painter or you may accidentally interrupt it before it's finished.
