As suggested in the title I am a noob here. I am a 20 year old college student looking to progress in the studies of digital 2d and 3d art. I want to create models and concept art for video games Very Happy . Though I have only gotten into this field recently due to lack of funds and so on. I have done a little research and wish to know since many of you here seems to know what you are doing, if any of you have any thoughts or advise for a new comer. Any website referals, tablet techniques, or suggestions on how the best way to learn how to use software and the type you use would be greatly appriciated. Thank you for your time.

Hi Driften,

I feel a little stupid posting now, because of the w-word in your topic Smile

Anyways, it seems that you've discovered the "exciting world of art" and want to get into it as quickly as possible. I'm afraid you should forget about working for games for a while, if you're just starting to hone your skills. It's a tough market, there's so much talented young people who've been doing art for years, yet not everyone of them is doing it for a living.

After the necessary rant, here's the real stuff you need:

Check the sumaleth's link archive
http://www.sumaleth.com/links/

I also recommend CgTalk forums (you probably know the place already)
www.cgtalk.com

Do a search on these forums (the pre 2001 sijun is good) and something interesting and worth reading WILL pop up. Color theory, lighting exercises, all that stuff. It's just a shame that many image links are not available from the old threads.

You need to be interested enough to do it yourself, the real pro's (I'm not one) may never answer these questions you've just posted, they're just too common.

There's good books on drawing, Glenn Vilppu, Andrew Loomis and many others. But reading about art is only useful for while, practise is what you need. When you encounter a problem, for example "this cube I've been shading looks way too flat" and then read something about Values you might appreciate the information more, because of your personal struggle with the same issues.

Tablet techniques and software, they're important as well, but not nearly as important as the basic drawing stuff. So don't worry about those things as of yet. Just start drawing and painting with whatever, and see if you can find enjoyment from it. If not, stick to something else, you just have to love what you do in order to (professionally) compete with the rest of the pack

Hope that helps, and good luck Smile

Never date a girl with a leprechaun tattooed on her breast.
