Yes, from mirror, I exagerated the shadows somewhat, still very flat though. I had just read Loomis's notes on accentuation, selection & subordination. That helped me actually thinking while I painted it ... contrary to these

Sheesh, where's everybody gone?
I tried the 'grisaille' method. I spent an ungodly amount of time on this one... almost 12 hours. I spent half this time in step 1.
Not sure about the background in the final version, but I left it for curiosity's sake: it's PURE GRAY !! My eyes just wont give me gray, it looks coloured one way or another.

faB, watmough, llama, those are great! Really nice job there llama, must take a lot of restraint and skill to keep the paper blank for the midtones like that.
painted this last night. 2 hours with acrylic in front of the mirror.
It's my first acrylic in months. I realised I've only done a small handful of acrylic paintings in total and want to learn how to paint with matter.
I learnt some stuff, like you don't have to paint opaque all the time, and can paint semi-transparently/wet over dry areas to darken them down or lighten them up progressively.
Is worth getting more than one brush? I mean I don't want to sped the money if it's not necessary, but do any of you know if it makes things easier?
I included a grayscale version because I painted it under an odd-coloured artificial light and only in the morning did I see what colours I'd really been using!
yes, my hair is that shiny with grease, and no, you may not laugh at my hideous teenie-tash! |

Thanks Llama, Capt Fred,
llama- great value range, what medium is it ?
jr - doesnt have to look lame, but yes selfportraits can be very unforgiving :/ I like yours, there's a little problem with the jaw, or angle of the head, the eye-nose-mouth axis seem to be on a different axis, if your head was slightly titlted forward, that's a very nasty angle to draw I think unless you can see beyond all thinking and symbols, which is very hard with self portraits and portrait s in general, only construction can help,
Tomasis- cant see yours and I think it didnt work a few days ago last time I checked as well..
I read somewhere that the art of portrait was like the 'holy grail' of art. so when I do a horrible SP I think 'thats ok.. I knew it was going to be really hard anyway'.. these things can really frustrate me, some days I just cant 'see' the way portraits need you to see. :/
Here's scruffy me or something that resembles it. I felt the background was empty so I had some fun. Charcoal Pencil 7 in Corel Painter IX.

Tomasis: that's nice, looks solid and a little graphic, good job on the fore-shortened side of the face.
jr- I forgot to say I like how you put the values in the face and left the rest as lines, so the whole comes out as 'a portrait'. _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.

vindow I think your SP's a great and in case you don't know about it, checkout the conceptart.org 'guest self portrait' forums and come and post there !
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22
Its been a little slow as we approach the new year, but it's a great forum with lots of feedback. Post in the monthly thread if you are interested! _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.
