I was just wondering if anyone would be able to give me any help at all with creating a Porfolio. The reason for this being I have opted either to do the course BA (Hons) Computer Animation or BA (Hons) Digital Chararacter Animation. However since I do not have the art qualification needed (formal art qualification at post-16 level) I need to create a portfolio showing what skill I have.

For this portfolio I have been asked to draw at least half a dozen examples of life drawing and also half a dozen origional charcater designs. The life drawing must be of the human figure in a verity of poses. All of the work must be done totally by hand and not digital.

So it comes down to me trying to find out as much as possible in the short time I have (20th of December is the hand in date) about the human body and any other tips which I should know about creating a decent portfolio which would be more than enough to get me into The University of Teesside and onto the appropriate course.

I thought this would be the best place to search and ask for help and so have done so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom.

Not sure about Teeside but at Duncan of Jordanstone (Dundee, Scotland) they accepted only 200 students from the 800+ applications this year. Competition will likely be as stiff at Teeside and you will be up against people who have spent a lot of time and effort compiling work.

Teeside will be looking for more than simply a decent portfolio and they will see through any such effort in favour of a portfolio which displays a passion and hunger for the subject.

My advice to you would be to get yourself on a portfolio preparation course and/or enrol in night classes for life drawing. Don't try to run before you can walk with this or else you will fall flat on your face.

I myself left a career in web design to study art and enrolled in a portfolio preparation course for one year at Dundee College. On the strength of the portfolio I was accepted to Duncan of Jordanstone and I am currently mid-way through my general course year preparing to move into the TVI / Animation department.

May also be worthwhile talking to the University and College so they can advice you on what would be best.

Books will also help, take a look at this one -

Anyway, good luck man, lemme know how you get on.

Thanks a lot mate. I really do doubt I'm going to get onto the course I'm wanting though due to me having 5 days to complete my work and thus have more or less no time at all to study anything. I'm not even sure of what my talent is going to be like compared to other students, as I'm not the most imaginitive person out there.

I've been trying to do some character designs although I've not got very far due to me being a slow worker and all.

If you only have 5 days to put a portfolio together unfortunately it will show you only put 5 days into it. Most portfolios represent the 'best of the best' of your work. Unless you make each one of your peices the masterpeices of your talent, I'd put more time in actually seriously putting one together and trying again next semester or term, or what have you. There aren't any quick work arounds on getting a nice portfolio that is something that is a dynamic ongoing process of examining the needs for the job/etc and progresses as your work does as well.

Yeah I know chief, that why it's so confusing. They literally gave me like a week and a bit to complete the whole of it.

I've decided I may just go for a different course which allows me to choose different categories from each degree. So I could do animation alongside web design etc.

Thanks a lot to you all who replied though. I really do appreciate your words.
