A painting I was working on (still in line drawing stage) turned into this:
I don't know how it got corrupted. I tried opening it up in Photoshop and Painter, and neither could change it back to the way it was. Any ideas? |

Try a system restore. If you have xp, set it to the time that you last seen the image in a perfect setting (with no coruption). If it was like 4 days ago, then set it to 4 days ago. The system restore will re-install all the unistalled items, and unistall all the installed items you did in the previous 4 day. It will also undelete many of the files.
If that doesn't work, I have no clue.
***MAKE SURE TO SAVE IMPORTANT WORK***
I installed painter, and my dad went and did a sytem restore. Damn, Now I have to re-install painter. |

Sorry I d'ont have any solution, but this last days, i have had the same problem!
It was 9 of the morning when i tried to open a file of a cd cover for a client. No way to open the file: "File corrupted. It can't be opened" or something like that!! Argll!! ... ><
i tried defrag n opened it ... same pb
i tried to scan my hd for viruses n opened it ... but same pb
So the best solution is to backup on another partition of the disk every evening. and if somebody hav any solution, it will be interresting !!
cheers! _________________ Pierrick l'Illustrateur des bois.

I dont think System Restore deals with personal data, it deals with files that are necessary for the system to run, Dlls, executables, drivers, installed apps, things that could mess up the regular running of the system.
from microsoft site :

System Restore does not affect your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or email) so you won't lose changes made to these files. |
I think someone else posted about a problem with Painter, that corrupts PSD files, that would be if you saved your PSD into Painter.
In doubt, you might want to do a hardrive check to see if there are no 'bad sectors' on the harddrive. This can be really nasty. _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.

Sorry Luna,
don't have any suggestion on PS, but if you use Painter in the future, there is a way to restore your work with the script-function, its' very handy imho.
And i'm not sure if PS' "Actions" are likely the same and are also temporarily stored to the harddisk. Sorry i'm not a "PS-crack".
But is it worth try to restore the file instead to paint it again ? (just a question ^_^;![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

I tried two different system restore dates, and both times it tells me system cannot be restored. But I suspected system restore is only good for the system files and not personal files anyway.
I figured out what happened to my corrupted file. I checked the date it was last saved, and then compared to the system restore timeline, and it looks like while I was working on the painting, Windows Update automatically downloaded an update, and I went ahead and installed it. I forgot to shut down Photoshop and thought it was a small update that probably would only take less than a minute. It was a small one, but it asked me to restart, and I did--except I hit the restart button BEFORE I hit save for the PSD file--and I think that's what did it. There wasnt' sufficient time for the PSD file to finish saving, and that's why it got corrupted. I'm pretty sure that's what it is because when I try to open it in Photoshop, it tells me "Unexpected end of the file was encountered" or something lke that. |

Be aware that Painter ( has a habit of corrupting files - especially if your saving it out as a PSD.
I don't know if you saved it in painter or if it was just a Photoshop document.
Just a hint that when using Painter - save a lot! both as a PSD and as a RIFF file.
I know that doesn't helps but everyone else seems to have that angle covered regarding what to do about it i.e system restore. |

Something different but fits in here.
If your psd file look the same as Lunatique's one after burning it on a CD your CD burner is got broken. Sounds logically, but you can burn and even though open some psd files without any mistakes. Took a time to find out. |

The moral of the story seems to be " never too early to start saving in sequenced versions in Painter and PS". |

ditto... I also save duplicates of the sequenced files on a separate hard drive... just in case I do somethign stupid with the sequenced files,,, which would not be unheard of.... for me... _________________ HonePie.com

Have you installed any new harddrives lately? I put my HDD in my girlfriend's computer during the summer, and after a while I got a couple of corrupted psd-files, and later I got even more of them. One morning all the files on every partition was gone, except for one partition, the one where I stored all the personal stuff (lucky, I know), but when I put it back on my own computer and reformatted, it worked like normal again.. I guess it was because of overheating? |
