Hey there, this is personal stuff and a second matte painting I did. Picture was painted completly from the scratch and damn I've finally done it Smile
I left few moments not so detailed as I wished, just thought that this is the moment to start something new.
And heres the picture:

Wish you like it Smile

Holy Shit, that looks great. Im amazed how things like this can be painted from scratch. The part I like most is the mountain right next to the waterfall.

wow damn you. do you thought about it is not possible to have same values in foreground and background at the same time? or I'm wrong?

I mean it would be nice to make higher contrast between fore and back grounds

Absolutely amazing! Top quality work.

If I was being really nit-picky, I'd say that the clouds look a bit 'push-blended'' in parts. But that's being pretty anal.

Are you working up to any personal project or theme? Or is this just personal practice?

Anyway, keep it up!

[ edit - can you tell us the final resolution? also, how long it took? ]

Whooooooa!!!! Absolutely mindblowing! I cant grasp how you can even start off with this... Actually I would be really interested to see how you develop a picture like this since I am to do a mattepainting in the near future.

If you dont have any steps from the way, please explain. Do you first start off with the overall lighting sketches or what kind of approach you have here? Interested to see more.

and the final as above.
I cant find first sketch, anywhere Sad

Ceenda the pic was done as a practice and its personal project. I love doing concept artworks much more than paintings like that, but I'm sure I'll be performing another matte paintings, more complex soon (dunno if next month, next decade or next year Wink )
Anyway thanks for comments, I'm really glad U like it Smile

I wonder, how does one get all the colors and values as nailed down as possible? Looking alot at photos of the scenery youre trying to paint or what is the best approach to learn it?

the resolution I've started the sketch was around 1600x1000, then before going to details I pushed it to 4000px wide. Its because sketching on 4000 is quite difficult and make my machine a little bit "slow" Very Happy
I started painting the picture at July and after few days, I dropt it for a BIG while. And I got back to it a week ago. Whole painting took me few hard days of working, I think twice less than the first matte paint I did. Its always my problem, time count Smile

I really really like this also. top notch..
I do like the reddish in the right piece of mountain before making it blue/darker in the final version though, really has that stone feel to it.

like glitterbug mentioned, do u have any tips on how to pick these great values?

gLitterbug,eyewoo->(thanks!) I think the best way is to watch from the nature and learn from nature, I mean looking how's the light and shadows cast, affects the colors of the scene and so on (if I understood the question correctly of course;) ). Its quite difficult question, of course the easiest way is to paint from several photo references. I use custom brushes and test them to find out the best way to show the detail in the easiest way. Sometimes masking or filtering soem picture elements do much faster and easier.
In all personal pictures I avoid mixing the painted parts with photos. I know that matte paintings nowaydays are mostly very good photo-mixed or 3d rendered stuff. This way is much cheaper, easier and faster. I don't see it as something bad, God gave as computer to use it and make our lives easiest Wink
Sorry for OT btw Smile
And thanks for such a good comments.

Cheers,

I really need to get out of this space art stuff and start doing speedpaintings etc of other things. Theres not much you can do with space art, but the possibilities are limitless if you can paint effectively Very Happy
