Hello all. I'm working on a portrait of an internet friend and could use some advice to make it the best it can be. Any input is greatly appreciated. Here's where I'm at so far.

it's a small shame that you can see that the illusion does not continue 'forever'. You can see the missing painting in the smallest.
It's looks fine! |

Yes it does.
The woman's skin, hair and hat look like they were painted by
a complete different person than the one who painted the
dress. The folds and the patter in the dress are absolutely
photographic. The styles are completely different! |

Stacey, I painted the entire piece and have saved it several times if you'd like to see a wip from start to finish. I believe what you may be seeing is what happens when I convert the sizeof my TIF file from 5000 x 8000 @ 300 dpi to i/8th that size and 96 dpi the sublte shading of the skin on the arms and face becomes blotchy looking and nothing like the original. I did want the face & hat to have a more painterly quality. The hat was done in a more impressionistic style using thousands of dots of color and I am very satisfied with the results. I had some 8x10 made of the piece at a photo kiosk and they look great. I'm away for the weekend , but can post some close ups when I return and you will see the style is not completely different as you suggest. Glad you like the dress, I'm quite happy how it came out. |

I think it's beautiful and I like the colours and rendering, but my first impression was that the effect in the framed picture (mise en abime?) detracts somewhat from the main subject. That said I like the idea that the 'complete' image is in the frame. It has a little Edward Hopper feel to it, maybe its the wall that gives this impression. I hope you're not going to add detail to the wall.. there is way enough detail already, i m h o. _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.

The construction of the face needs a little tweaking... The eyes are not level, and I think the mouth is a bit slanted. It gets hard to see those things after working on a picture for a while. Try mirroring the image just to see it in a different way, I think you will see what I mean then.
Oh, you might want to work some colour into the hands, they look a little lifeless now. |

Thank you all for the helpful comments...... I'm working to tweak things, using your observations and suggestions. Captain Fred..... I'm the imbecile not you!!! After you noticed the frame misiing in the smallest picture I corrected it. Here's an update(detail of area I've been working on)..... not sure if I'm going forward or backward.... seems to need more work all of the time.

I've never seen the person portrayed and don't have your reference of course, but it looks to me that the eye is still off and the jaw is also slanted. I hope you don't mind, I did a little repositioning to show what I mean:
the (our) right eye is still probably not quite right in this one either, but take another look at the reference and you'll get it there. |
