Finally the DVD is out and I can show you the work i did for HP3
unfortunatelly i haven't got all the paintings and textures but I can show you these 2 paintings meanwhile. the project was fun and it was interesting to make the same scene in different times of the year!
these are the Raw paintings, in the movie they changed the angle alot in the comp, the summer one i almost cannot even recognize

"Ahha is that a render or a painting"
I think it is a mix of both. He did say it was a matte painting. Which probably means there were a mixture of both real and fake models.
@Flus, Very nice work. I like it a lot! Wish I could see the process. |

I wish I could see the process too, but isn't that against WB's copyright law?
If not, please show! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I saw this movie for the first time the other night and when I saw this tree scene I thought it looked great. I had no idea it was done by someone that I admire.
It's great that a lot of the people that post here at Sijun work, in one way or another, on most of the movies that come out now. I believe that to become better you need to surround yourself with the best. That's why I've been here for years...learning slowly...err...
Anyhow, nice work, Capt.FlushGarden. This Potter movie is the best looking one to date. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Very nice indeed, I especially love the gnarly tree.
How big is the original file if I might ask? |

I still have to stand by my word. I think harry potter sucks! But the movie itself is done well! |

Could you show us some close ups please? |

you say they changed the angle alot in the movie. Does this mean they had another mattepainting in the movie or did they project this one onto some 3d geometry and shifted the camera around?
they are looking really nice btw. _________________ www.karlsimon.com

thanx guys!
Simon: It's the same paintings but this is the original angle wich they projected from, and then they rendered it out in other angles.

shit, forgot to answer some questions,
Skullmonkeys: I'll update this thread when ive asked my former boss about the closeups,
gLitterbug: I started the image at 4096 pixels square, setting up the basic shapes, then as I was certain about the look i scaled it up to 6 k and worked on light and some details, then 8K for the smallest details, and then half of the painting disappears in the movie hahaha ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

flushy, do you know anything about the process of using the the matte-painting with 3d geometry to change angle? Sounds interesting.
Reminds me of Canoma i think it was called. How do they match the painting onto geometry? Do you submit a the file to them on multiple layers, presumably you have to. for other reasons as well.
Just generally interested in how they use matte paintings in production, beyond the basic compositing stuff. If have any answers that would be great!
I like the autumn one a lot! Both very nice, lovely rich grass, looks thick and substantial. |

Capt.Fred
they have a simple 3D model of hills and rocks, then they choose the angle and render a plate wich you start painting on, it is very important to keep everything in layers, and even paint the grass that is underneath /behind the rocks, because when the painting is finished, it is camera projected piece by piece from BG to FG, so in theese Mattepaintings there is 6 or so layers, Sky, mountians, back mountains, school, back hills, front hills and rocks, if the whole matte paintign was projected on everything and the angle was moved, the rocks would appear as stretched things on the grass, another trick , when you turn the angle too much, the shader displays a strong color so you can se where the object is not textured.
sometimes when grass needs to fold over rocks nicelly and you need to hide the sharp edge between rock and gorund, simple cards of grass is modelled around the base of the rocks and then a grass texture is projected on top of that, (with an alpha map of course)

I just watched that movie the first time with my kids this weekend. I would have recognized that scene in a second. I dont want to ruin it for those who haven't seen it. lets just say, its when they see themselves. very very cool. |
