I'm a kind of afraid to continue working on this image, but some help and hints from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind the image will be desaturated and tweaked with levels when finished

Why dont you use color instead of desaturating it and using levels?
The ideas cool but theres not much to critique on. I think you pretty much beat the hell out of the color wheel.
Work on it some more, clean up the sketch, and define the details a little more.
