I'm sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but I haven't found anything.
I'm trying to learn to draw like since I remember myself I work as a 3D modeler for game developing company and I feel myself inferior cause I can't draw a concept sketch myself. I have ton of anatomy and how-to-draw books, I try to draw something from time to time, but I feel I need some kind of a schedule (or program?) and I need your help with it.
I can't attend any art classes. I don't have enough spare time for it and I don't think we have a decent instructors here in Lithuania. So, I'll have to study myself. What exactly should I learn and how? My final destination are character concepts and something like human portrets. I know, that I should know perspective, light, anatomy, composition. I can buy some books, DVDs etc. But I need to organize myself.
I understand, that all this stuff is individual. Some people don't need any guides at all, others can draw cubes for years and don't get any results, but in colleges and schools you have some kind of a program, same for everyone. I need something like this program. |

Well, I am no pro and have never had to chance to attend a drawing class so do not take my advice to serious.
If you really want to get better you should try to spend 1 to 2 hours a day or even more...
As you might know drawing from life is very important.
You can do that everywhere. Keep a skech book!!
Start with the basics (perspective, light, anatomy, composition)
That's boring at the beginning but will help you as you go along.
I learnt ALOT by copying works of other artists. If you want to draw character concepts copy a hundred of people you admire and afterwards I swear you you will be better. Not sure if this is the best way but it helped me so far. AS you said that's very individual.
1 hour from life per day. and if you have time, spend another hour copying stuff. (this is just what helps me. opinions are different)
I have no idea though what the programs in colleges and schools look like.
Maybe take a lok at conceptart.org - there wou will find alot of nice exercises.
But remember, there are no shurtcuts, really.
Doing it will make you better. The more you do it the better you will get. |

1. Sharpen pencil
2.Sit down within arm reach of paper
3.Place hand (with pencil inside, point down) over paper until point and paper are touching
4.Move arm to recreate lines, shapes, etc. (to break a line, you may have to lift the pencil, but don't fret, you can touch the paper with the point again if this happens)
5. If pencil breaks, repeat steps 1-4
6.Go bloody crazy!
