Here is a matte painting I did for the Chronicles of Riddick. We start tight in on the runway and then do a snap back to reveal the envirnment. The story point is that everyone is huddled on or around the runway avoiding the deadly light and the shadow is slowy receding. It was kind of a weird shot design because we needed the sulfur cliff on the left and the weird obsidian thing in the middle. Then there is the giant heat storm coming in as well. It was a fun lighting challenge, though. There was no plate, just matte painting. There are more Riddick paintings on my site.

Wow, always nice to see matte paintings. Just visted your website, both thumbs up, great work. It would be really cool to see a process of one of your matte paintings.

My wife and I enjoyed the film. And I have a great affinity for matte paintings. Thanks for sharing!

Damn, I should have seen the movie. Now I am really interested how these look in the finished matteshot. Mattepainting is one of my biggest interests and I am always trying to figure out the how the animation progress works.
Awesome man. Always a pleassure to see your stuff.
Did you animate parts of these shots too?
...are there 3d mattepaintig elements in these shots?

Max Kulich -- I put together a little thing on turning 2D images into 3D animation, if you're interested:

(I did Riddick's silvery "red eye" in the close shots for the last movie using 3D CG, btw)

Jfrancis... Thats cool thanx.. Ive been wanting to look up info on this for a while.. i need brush up on my 3d though.. Ive never really done it but i understand it.. I totally lost you where you start talking about

" I use "perspective projection" from camera 2 to project the image of the box onto the virtual box. I use the same camera to project the "clean floor" plate onto a matched position virtual floor object."

TOtally dont know what to do there to get the same work area as you... but i guess im just a noob at 3d and ill have to look for a easier step by step..

Thanks, everyone, I appreciate it. It was a fun show to work on because it had a lot of different environments and often times whole shots would be matte paintings. This particular one took about a week and was 4096 pixels wide.
Max Kulich- There was no 3D in this painting, it was all done 100% in photoshop and then the quick pull back was just a very fast zoom out done in the comp. There were 3D elements that were put on top of the painting in the comp like super heated rising gas and smoke elements.
