Hey, I have owned a drawing tablet for a year or 2 now, and absolutely love it. I was experimenting with something the other day,

I put a very very VERY thin coat of regular "2001 Car wax" on the drawing surface, and I can't get over how awesome it is. the surface is so smooth, it's like butter. just buff it off like normal car wax after you let it dry, and boom, you could ice skate on it.

let me know what you think. (there is no residue left and it just feels awesome. My hand doesn't stick and in my opinion it helps with protecting the surface).

I think the protection bit is unquestionable. However, to some sketchers, too smooth a drawing surface may not be preferred as their muscle memory still yearn for the feedback of the pencil on paper feeling.

Yepsir... I've even put a sheet of paper on the tablet surface to add that bit of drag... unfortunately it wears the tip nibs down very, very quickly, so I've learned to work without the paper drag... Cool

I used bowling ball polish for about 3 years on my Wacom, but now use Turtle Wax Emerald series, because it leaves no residue. It's lengthened the life of my plastic overlay immeasurably, and helps prevent and fill minor scratches.

I also find I need to replace my tips much less often (say 2-3 times a year after heavy daily usage)...

There are some really good polishing waxes used for Motorcycle Helmet Visors that I've read others swearing by as well.

Anyone know a way (other than the paper-on-top) of making it less smooth?

Probably plastic on top? :) Hey, i have an idea for you. In fact it doesn't matter which material you put on the top of the tablet if you replace the stilus tip with a toothpick. :) I did. It doesn't scratch the drawing surface and wears down very slowly.. and it is cheap as a pixel aswell :D

What kind of toothpick? The sharp ones or the rounder ones?

so how does it conduct the electro magnetic information from the tablet upto the pen?

Power is transmitted to the pen via the principle of induction. That's why you can put a sheet of cardboard between the stylus and tablet and still have it work normally, as long as the pen is well inside the magnetic field created by the tablet.

Quote:
Michael Faraday lived from 1791 to 1867. In 1821, at the age of 30, he published an article titled, "On Some New Electromagnetic Motions" in the Quarterly Journal of Science. This changed his life and our lives in a momentous way.

He was experimenting with magnets and wires, and noticed that as a wire was moved through a magnetic field, a voltage was induced or created within the wire. If the wire was a part of a closed circuit, then current would flow.

I really hate the feel of plastic nib on plastic sheet. Sometime when I'm sketching, the Wacom give me the "fingernail on blackboard" kind of shudders. I tried putting paper on it, but like Phil said, it wears the tip down. I wish there were other solutions.

balistic i know that, but i thought that it only traveled 5mm, i didn't realise the field extended 20mm..

Lun the stroke stylus feels better imho, it has a spring inside that gives a better feel Smile

or u could get the pencil or pen sytlus that allows u to draw on paper normally Smile

stroke pen
ink pen

i did try looking on wacom's site but they seem to be pushing the Intuos3 so the information wasn't readily availalbe

@ Lunatique and others who hate zero-friction drawing:
I hated how the pen so easily skated on my wacom board. I tried a piece of paper, but that provided too much friction compared to a pen or pencil on paper.
Finally I found that an overhead sheet for inkjet printers did the trick. I use the non-printable side, the printable side felt a bit weird, like drawing on sandpaper. The friction was very much comparable to a ballpoint on paper, and doesn't wear the tip of the pen! Try it Smile

Wacom introduced the felttip-nib with the Intuos3 series. The Intuos3 nibs can be used with the Intuos2 and Cintiq series as well and you can buy them seperately. The felttip nib offers a nice rough feeling on the tablet surface although it does not completely compare to using a piece of paper on top the drawing surface. Its like a good compromise.
