value study ~2h, glass "made in italy", the circles are 'inverted' (recessed) bubbles.. the glass is blue with more saturation at the bottom and clearer at the top, I dont think that comes off in my pic :/

Spooge, I really like the way you handled the skin texture of the sea monster. It's really facinating for me, I have to ask a question. I hope you don't mind.
I can see this really perculiar 'fish belly' like specular thing going on the lower arm area of the monster. Kind of a rainbow ish specular happening there. What causes that to happen? Some kind of light refraction or camera effect? Could you tell me how you achieved that in photoshop? Im very curious.

This is a rough concept illustration for a client. It's for a poster for a local choir who is putting on a christmas Concert, "Our gift to you." The large amount of empty space is left for the text. I just wanted to share

Matthew, since there is no rational, objective definition of art, it follows that defining what makes a masterpiece just as difficult. Work done by a master? What if this particular piece was done by Mr. master after a fish sandwich that had sat out on the counter for a little too long? I have seen Sargents before that I question whether or not he did them.

You ask if you created "masterpiece" with help from a projector, would it detract from the achievement. Maybe go all the way, let's all poke out and eye and drink some drain cleaner so we have bigger obstacles to overcome. Makes our achievement even bigger.

Drunken Muse's point is right on. Give one of these devices to anyone and does it help them? I can see bad tracings from ten miles. Drawing is about thought, not transferring shapes. It really doesn't make much difference.

Does the fact that more people like something make it better? That is as good a definition as any, I suppose. All hail Mr. Kincade. So even if it is a good enough definition, it's not good enough.

So without these strong definitions, we are back to the subjective. What makes you a better artist is entirely up to you. (that's artist, not illustrator. If you want to be one of them, I got some other advice) As I said, I don't use the lucigraph, but I would if it fit my purposes. You should make your OWN decisions about that. Anyone trying to answer such a question in an absolute sense should be... well, giggled at. There is no Right answer that can be discovered through pilgrimage or introspection or bought or negotiated.

This is why I think you going about things in your own way is the best thing, since you have strong feelings about it. But be careful that you are not doing it out of simple rebellion or laziness, which I think you are not. Going your own way is really risky, but it's the most artistic way, at least in a Western sense.

Why would someone want to define art narrowly? The best reason I can think of is to make others acknowledge their tastes and shower money and accolades on them. They want to define art to (surprise!) make themselves (or what they like) at the top of the heap. To really embrace the subjective in art, you have to be willing to accept that maybe nobody will care about your art. Would you do art if you were the only person on earth? I know there are many shadings in the answer to that, but you get the idea.

Oh almost forgot, the oil thing, well, I just started seeing this problem and fixing it is easier said than done. I am working on it.

Skullmonkeys, with that one I started with a little section of an old watercolor painting, and that gave me the shape and color information that you can then start playing with. In some cases it needed to be distorted a little. You can pull out dominances and play with color with all the tools you have, blur and sharpen, sat and desat, etc. But it has to be pretty subtle to work, and not screw up the values and therefore the shapes. The main thing is to get the value working. I was happy with the arms and hands in that one. The head needs a major rethink.

Personnaly, i think everybody who is more than passioned by something can be an artist in that particular domain. I mean, someone who is passioned by ...hum ... doing cofee, practicing it lot of times per days, learn a lot about the whole world different cofee can be a artist cofee. I think it can be the same about illustration.

Someone who have a lot of different style, who have learn a lot about great illustrator, who can create quickly a good illustration with only general idea , who can adapt a particular style on a particular idea can be an illustrator artist. Before, i thought the whole art domain was: painting, music. 4 years ago, when i was 20, i realized by learning karate that more than passion can be a art. Karate is a martial art but even if i'm brown belt, personnaly, i don't have in mind that i'm a martial artist. Each person who can see him practicing can say that my teacher (4th Dan) is an artist, so he is one.

I have had a paint teacher who said that you don't have to proclaim as an artist, only "the other" have the right to proclaim you "an artist". I have kept that idea in mind, and i think everybody which are proclaiming artist should keep that in mind. I have seen to much illustrator website which showed if first page "artist"... You don't have to put them on front page. Each of visitor can deduce if you are or not.
Finally, I think Mr Spooge that you are an illustrator artist.
