Recently I've been worried that I have no characteristic style of my own. I have a series of examples that will prove the aforementioned...

My stuff goes from scifi concept design to megaman to crappy drawn babes. Honestly, what does it take to acquire a consistent style? Any help would be much appreciated. thanx

Oh, and sorry for posting this in Gallery of Finished Works. I realized that after I had completed the post. ::Plea for forgiveness::

hm... don't worry.. your style is built into you. the line you draw won't be like any line drawn by anyone else, i say.. and the better you get, the more your own style will develop. i can already see a unique style in your work... style is simply an artist's most efficient/preferred way of developing his/her ideas based on what you've already experienced... so, just experiment more.. i would strongly suggest drawing from life, cuz that lets you learn to define things in your own way.

Actually, it's impossible for you to not have a style of your own. Everything you do is influenced by characteristics that are uniquely you. In all of the entire universe, there is only one you! Therefore, your individual style is inherently implied and can be no other way. That is a powerful thing to acknowledge. I suspect what you're really saying is that your personal drawing characteristics aren't currently obvious, and that is something that takes time and practice. Your personal preferences, likes or dislikes, or style regarding this lifetime have evolved and changed over time. You didn't become who you are all at once. As you lived your life, your style developed. Sketching, painting, and or rendering is the same process of evolvement. Keep at it and give it time. Wink

In a less abstract explanation, the unique style of an artist is in general built from this (as a start):

x The shapes you prefer.
x The prefered combination of shapes.
x The way you prefer to simplify shapes.

These, along with motif, are some of the things that will be with the artist from the first thing he draws until the last. (Especially lineart, but also other.) The preferences are, of course, subject to change during time, which also evolves/changes the style. The difference between a beginner and someone who has drawn for many years is that the more experienced will be better at describing (drawing/painting) the shapes & combinations he prefer, along with having much more control over things like simplification. (Lineweight etc). Therefor the style of the more experienced is more distinct.

If someone disagrees, feel free to turn this description into flaming roadkill,
until then I can only recommend the best advice ever for aspiring artists:

DRAW DRAW DRAW!
