Gots me a title for this one, in honor of holloween:

The Dryad Rejected

left the lines in - figured they added something. probably should have erased some - the line on the woman's face in particular jumps out at me.

Flush, yes, there are painters that use one brush size and it works fine. But there are a lot of other things that you have to do to make this kind of thing work, mostly with shape and value simplification. My tree painting would have been stronger if I had thought about it that way, but I guess I was trying for something more realistic than that.

Pato, yes that is the idea.

Eyewoo, I feel exactly the same way about drawing. I draw for a while and it is exhausting, so I avoid it. But like most things, it is more enjoyable when you know more about it and are better at it. I am getting more knowledgeable and it is getting slowly easier and more fun along the way. But I don't mean drawing as in using line and tone, painting well is mostly drawing, just not with lines. Drawing to me is about structure. Thurber and Silverstein are great drawers. There is a very strong foundation underneath what they do. I think they knew this stuff intuitively (talent) but I am afraid the rest of us have to figure it out with the frontal lobes. Sometimes I think the best drawers are animators. Ah, enough babbling

Yes, something like that. If you want to do things traditionally. I am finding it is important for what I want to do, but it may not be for everybody.

Yes I am very familiar with Church and his life. He was/is a great inspiration for me from early on.

Lunatique, The subject of schmids paintings to me seems to be the use of paint. I love the work based on this, and his drawing is impeccable.

As far as content versus technique, yes, I suppose with digital I am familiar enough with the tools I can go on autopilot some. But with oil, I just need to do a few thousand more of them. With brain engaged. Which means analyzing why each one sucks, until they don't anymore:) hopefully.
I will keep an eye out for your posts and give you my opinion, no problem.

Matthew, what you are referring to is additive and subtractive technique, and yes, that can help out with a lot of things. It's a great way to work digitally especially. I wonder is the blue dots in the b's paintings are artifacts. The museum was dark and the camera handheld. I brightened up the images as well. But I know there are amazing subtle warm and cool greys in all his skintones. I read he used no pouncing or blender brushes. How he did it is beyond me.

spooge, ive never seen any of bouguereaus paintings in person, but if he painted anything like ingres(wouldnt be surprised) he would have used very thin transparent glazes over a grey underpainting.also, glazing complements over each other to control saturation.
anyway,i really like your oils.

Beware of reading this, your world view will be destroyed:

I saw a documentary today with a guy called David hockney and I tell you major setback for my world perspective.
Big painters like Vermeer, Carvaggio and Rembrandt and many others used Camera Obscura and flipped mirror pictures which they traced to do their drawings
and paintings way back, due to that such high realism that was in their
paintings. Bougerau apperently used reference photos and I always thought
he relied on studies and his drawings. My teachers just laughed at me when I said I felt like this tecnique was and is cheating, I wanna rely on my
memory and not use any kind of reference except for reallife-studies and then take it from there.
I know there are and will be a lot of strong opinions about this but I had to vent in here cause my mind is rushing at the moment and maybe I can feel a bit better after put this down here. Anyway, this guy called David
hockney proved and showed the methods on which the previous mentioned artists relied on.
Also explained why some of those old paintings was mirror flipped and everyone in the scene were left-handed, one painting they showed also had a monkey holding a piece of cloth with his left hand.
However the evidence to me was so strong that it is really obvious that they had used this tecnique, Camera obscura.

ok I'm go gonna cry for ten minutes then I am gonna pick up pencil version 1 and draw.

Thanks for all the previous comments on that house-setting with coke-can. Smile

keep up guys

good work matthew. about wat u said; i knew that some painters used this. i picked up a couple of books n they even tried to imploy these kind of techniques on its readers. i never knew famous painters like rembrandt used this. im with u with the cheating thing. when i use a reference, i really do feel like im cheating. so, wat i do is that if i ever want to paint something i look at it and try to memorize it. this way, when i go to paint it at a later date, its had time to develop and mature in my mind. then when i put it on paper, its my own version, something completely different, and even when im putting it on paper, im changing my mind. heh. however, if im having trouble with lighting, i go online to look for reference pictures to see how certain lights r. Very Happy thats my bit of it.
