You can always wait and get a better cheaper computer, but what do you think of the situation right now?

It seems there are some big improvements in cache and bus sizes and speeds from Intel, and a fast new AMD chip. I'm in the market for a new computer. Should I buy now? Wait until after November announcements? Wait until the new year?

Any opinions?

Eh - you'll always end up lacking - I have anyway. Get the latest, fastest, greatest thing and not long afterwards the "next" latest, fastest, greatest thing comes along.

Yep. It doesn't matter if you get it now or later, there will always be something NEW around the corner.

I guess people can call me oooooollllllddddd school. I have a GeForce2 32SDRAM and it works fine for me. Even runs doom3 at lowest settings at around 18 fps (5 fps with monsters).

I'd say go for it now. There's not a real reason to wait around because the next best thing is always just around the corner. And Yarik, 18fps doesn't sound too great for a first person shooter.

Intel just junked its plan for the 4ghz chip. That seems to indicate that CPU speed is peaking at the current crop. No much to wait for.

Yep... best thing is to jump in when your ready. Don't wait for the next better thing, 'cause there will always be a next better thing.

Francis: You need to know your what you wan't though. Photoshop performance? Silence? 3D performance? Overall performance, and so on.

AMD64 for games
Intel for Photoshop and 3D
AMD64 for allround and silent use
(I'm going AMD because of the silence (less heat) and because all modern chips are so damned fast that the performance gain in PS with intel isn't worth the noise.)

That my basic idea of the market right now.

can't remember the batch, but some P4 2.4 chips can supass 3.2Ghz when clocked...

if you can hold off i'd wait until after xmas as there is some new hardware coming out Smile

there are also romours of a new PS coming out in spring.. prehaps Adobe have come out with 64bit PS? who knows

but i agree with Sukhoi, AMD rules the roost with Games, Intel Xeons are shit hot @ PS etc

thats why my workstation is Intel and my gaming rig is AMD Smile

Intel for Photoshop and 3D

Actually the A64s are excellent for 3D, particularly Maya. nForce 4 chipset just came out too. It's tempting, even though my current box is the most perfect computer I've ever had . . .

I've been out of it, AMD chips cause less heat then Intel chips now? It was definitly the other way around back in the T-bird to XP days.

AMD is on a much smaller die size these days. There are people seeing 20% overclocks out of the latest A64s with stock cooling.

Plus AMD has the nForce series chipsets, which rock the house.
